6 Foods That Are Killing Your Bones!

Did you know that some foods actually leach minerals, such as Calcium, right out of the bone, including cartilage and joint areas? Some foods also block the bone’s ability to regenerate and strengthen itself. One study compared postmenopausal women who ate a high-salt diet with those who didn’t, and the ones who ate a lot of salt lost more bone minerals. If you are young and eating a high salt diet, your bones are actually aging and degenerating faster than you! What to do: Limit or avoid the above processed foods — they are literally crippling you. Why Soft Drinks are a Bone Killer: That fizzy quality in soda is from phosphoric acid — it specifically increases the rate at which calcium is excreted in the urine. Postmenopausal women, in particular, seem to be susceptible to vitamin A overload. Studies show that women whose intake was higher than 5,000 IUs had more than double the fracture rate of women whose intake was less than 1,600 IUs a day.

What to do: Switch to low-fat or nonfat dairy products only, and eat egg whites rather than whole eggs (all the vitamin A is in the yolk). Also check your multivitamin, and if it’s high in vitamin A, switch to one that isn’t.

  1. I do appreciate your article about 6 foods that are killing your bones; however, I question the wisdom behind recommending milk as a substitute for soft drinks or coffee. One book I’ve read with a chapter titled “Osteoporosis By The Quart” states that because of modern farming methods, the balance of calcium and phosphorus has been shifted so that the calcium is virtually inaccessible. In another book with a chapter titled “The Calcium Scare” Dr. Oski states, even though cow’s milk has 1200 mg of calcium per quart and human milk only has 300 mg of calcium per quart, the infant receiving human milk absorbs more calcium into his body. “Phosphorus can combine with calcium in the intestinal tract and prevent the absorption of calcium. Many nutritionist believe that only foods with a calcium-to-phosphorus ratio of two to one or better should be used as a primary source of calcium.”


    • Thank you Jim for the useful information about milk. When I said “milk” in the article, I was inferring the several varieties of “milk” options (instead of having to list by type: soy milk, almond milk, rice milk, skim milk, coconut milk, etc.). Granted, most people may associate milk with only cows. I have not drunk cow milk for easily 30 years or more. Nor do I regularly consume dairy products.
      The increasing number of people who are lactose-intolerant and gluten-intolerant should easily suggest that physiologically, our bodies are not designed, nor have they adapted well, to ingest bovine milk and certain grains, especially wheat.

Im 21 yrs old and found out i had arthritus in my ankle from getting hit by car couple yrs ago…so i went to Doctor and had to get bone fusion surgery. when they were done they told me my cartlige in my foot was peeling away. the 6 Bone killers above is pretty much all i eat. i love soda and fast food. i tried eating healthy but Im allergic to the preservatives they put in fruits and vegetables. How can i eat healthier?


    • May I be so bold as to say that you are in a perfect place to reclaim a personal love of yourself and your body. And the first place to start is diet. WHY? Because it is the essential fuel you must feed your body everyday. Our American diet is based upon fats, salts, sugars, processed foods, preservatives, nitrites and nitrates, alcohol, etc. So, you must do a thorough review of the type of fuel you are putting into your body, AND how that fuel is actually affecting your overall health, not just your injury.

      There is a preponderance of research evidence that supports the necessity of live foods as key to health. This includes learning how to properly prepare and cook or not cook vegetables, grains, etc., what oils to use and to eliminate, learning how juicing is key to the body’s need to absorb and use undestroyed mincronutrients (vitamins and minerals), and much more.

      With your present admitted diet preferences, and at your age, you need to make important changes. Otherwise, you are faced with critical health challenges related to bones and joints and connective tissues, not to mention potential for diabetes and other ailments. In short, your present diet is aging your body’s systems, stripping you of youthful vitality.

      As to your comment about preservatives in fruits and vegetables: Fresh fruits and vegetables, organic, don’t have preservatives. Maybe canned or packaged types do. Change your diet, and your allergies will improve.


    • You may be suggesting gelatin, no jelly, as an aid in rebuilding cartilage. The short answer is NO.

      Gelatin is produced by boiling the skins, tendons, and ligaments of cows, pigs, and oxen. Gelatin contains proteins from the animal parts as well as collagen, the primary component of joints, cartilage, and nails.

      There is research evidence that suggests gelatin keeps joints and connective tissues loose and flexible. Therefore, athletes and others use it. It is also suggested that gelatin relieves joint pain and arthritis symptoms (stiffness, swelling, etc.). However, there is no research that demonstrates that gelatin actually rebuilds cartilage, among its other touted benefits.
