There can be numerous forms of knee injuries that affect joints, tendons, ligaments, bursae and synovial fluids, bones, etc. Pain, inflammation, soreness and tenderness, swelling and heat are usual signs of a knee injury. One of the most common knee injury is that called “Runner’s Knee.” Because treatment and healing can be successfully self-administered, this frequent form of knee discomfort responds well to the use of herbal tinctures, salves, liniments and the like, instead of intervention using prescription medications that can disrupt other body systems. This article will help you to assess your knee discomfort, learn about your knee parts, and determine therapeutic strategies, including the use of Solomon’s Seal.

The term “Runner’s Knee” (patello-femoral syndrome) is basically an inflammation and pain under the knee cap where it rubs on the femur (thigh bone). Runners, dancers, gymnasts, and athletes are susceptible. However, people in general can experience its discomfort if they over exert themselves too quickly while trying to get in shape, have bad body mechanics such as ankle pronation, or perhaps carry too much weight that puts added force on the knees and ankles when walking, going down stairs, bending, or running.

The two most common forms of Runner’s Knee are patellar tendonitis and chondromalacia patella. Over-training and poor biomechanics (as a result of injury, ankle pronation, knock knees, and effects of excessive weight) are the leading causes.

Patellar tendonitis is when the pain is localized to the tendon in your knee cap. Chondromalacia patallea means that scarring has occurred because the knee cap does not sit properly in its femoral groove, and the underside has worn down and become rough and deteriorated. This can be caused by a lack of flexibility in any or all of the muscles known as the quadriceps, hamstrings, or calves. Most often, however, it is caused by a problem with the foot or ankle, usually due to excessively worn shoes and over training, if one is a runner. The problem can be exacerbated by excessive hill work.

In short, knee discomfort mostly relates to tendons and other connective tissues (such as ligaments and muscles), but does not have to specifically be localized in the knee. The ankles, calves, quadriceps and hamstrings play a key role in supporting the knee. Of course, other issues may cause knee discomfort, such as deteriorated cartilage, fractured patellar from a fall, or sprain, as noted below.

Because of the herb Solomon’s Seal’s usefulness in reading and adjusting connective tissues (tendons, ligaments), and helping with inflammation, joints (i.e. cartilage, synovial fluid, bursae, etc.) and bones, it should be considered part of a healing regimen with knee issues, as this article later discusses.

KNOW YOUR KNEE CAP

The kneecap’s formal name is the Patella. The patella is attached to the femur and tibia bones by ligaments and is located to allow sliding over the head of each bone when the knee is bent. The purpose of the kneecap (Patella) is to protect the two bones (femur and tibia) as they come together to create a movable joint – the knee. The patella acts as a shield to protect the joint. The kneecap also helps to keep the bones aligned and tracking together as we stand, walk, or run.

The Patella mostly tracks in a vertical motion but it also has some lateral motion which can be altered by improper foot mechanics. Most improper foot mechanics is a result of over-pronation or an excessive inward rolling of the foot when stepping or running. This misalignment of the foot arch results in misalignment of other joints such as the ankle, knees, hip and back. Furthermore, tendons and ligaments become stretched or damaged by such misalignments.

Pronation of the ankles

Misaligned feet can cause irritation and pain in the other joints; specifically, the knees, hips and back. If the foot pronates and collapses, the lower leg internally rotates to compensate. The upper leg bone may not rotate equally with the lower leg bone which causes misalignment of the Patella (kneecap) to the point where the joint becomes inflamed and sore.

This soreness, called Patella Tendonitis, can be painful and constant if the source of the irritation is not corrected.

SYMPTOMS

Tendonitis is inflammation in a tendon, usually the result of overuse. The affected tendon continues to function, at least for a while, but there is recurrent pain. You may develop tendonitis if you launch into high-intensity activities such as running or basketball on the weekend, while doing little to maintain your conditioning during the week, or if you increase your running/exercise regimen too quickly and not gradually (say, running 3 miles a day and suddenly increasing to 5 miles a day)

With age, tendons become stiffer and more prone to tendonitis, while supporting muscles become weaker and less able to provide protection. Inflexible hamstrings and quadriceps (often a result of sitting a lot) make someone more susceptible. Tendonitis in the knee can occur in the patellar tendon (most common) or the quadriceps tendon. Dancers, runners who are training vigorously, and athletes who jump a lot are subject to patellar tendonitis, sometimes called “jumper’s knee.”

Symptoms of patellar tendonitis include:

Pain above or below the kneecap where the tendons attach to bone

Swelling

Pain that recurs with particular activities and eases with rest in severe cases

Pain that no longer improves with rest

You may actually have other knee problems or injury not associated with patellar tendonitis. For your information, some of these are listed below, including symptoms and suggested issue.

Other Potential Knee Issues

Did your knee pain or swelling begin after a fall, twisting injury, or after the knee was hit by an object or person?
If the knee looks deformed, your knee may be fractured and/or you may have seriously torn some ligaments (ACL) in the internal area of the knee (Emergency care necessary)

Is the tenderness over the patella (kneecap)?
If you fell hard on your kneecap it may be fractured. Otherwise it may be bruised or you may have prepatellar bursitis

Is the knee swollen and filled with fluid, and is it difficult to walk on the leg?
Your symptoms may be from torn cartilage, ligament or chondromalacia patellae. The fluid or “water” in the knee is a reaction to the injury

Is the tenderness behind the knee, or did you feel something “pop” behind the knee while walking or running?
You may have a torn hamstring muscle

After the knee is better do you still have a grinding in the joint or does it ever lock?
This may be from torn cartilage

Is the knee swollen, red or both? Has the knee become tender over many months or years?
Pain and stiffness are often due to overuse or arthritis such as osteoarthritis

Do you have a swelling in the back of the knee?
This swelling may be from a Baker’s cyst

TREATMENT

Patellar tendonitis is not difficult to treat and is usually a short-term issue or inconvenience. Self-treatment is quite easy. If there are body mechanical issues, such as ankle pronation, then these should be looked at professionally; orthotics (arch support insoles) are a necessary intervention so that further damage or discomfort are not experienced.

Rehabilitation for tendonitis includes exercises to improve flexibility and address muscle imbalances that place extra stress on the tendons. You can usually resume normal activities in a few days and more demanding athletic activities in a few weeks, after the pain and swelling are gone and you have regained muscle strength.

The following is a typical routine for self-treatment:

For the first few days, treat with rest, ice, and NSAID pain relievers and inflammation reducers such as ibuprofen (Advil or Motrin) or naproxen (Aleve or Anaprox). Note: There are potential side affects when using NSAIDs. For this reason, natural herbal interventions such as Solomon’s Seal are equally useful and have broader benefits, as discussed below.

A knee support may also provide gentle support during mild activity and recovery.

Within a few days or week you can resume gentle activities that don’t aggravate the area. If pain doesn’t improve with rest, your doctor may apply a steroid solution over the area and use electrical stimulation to help the medication reach the tendon and reduce inflammation. It is best, however to dedicate recovery to Steps 1 & 2.

Gentle warm-up and stretching exercises are advisable before any type of activity.

If there are issues related to ankle pronation and foot arch, consider an orthotic arch support insole to properly align the feet and help in foot arch function. Over-pronation is corrected resulting in proper alignment of the feet and with that, proper alignment of other the joints. If the Patella Tendonitis condition was ignored and left unattended to, the soreness may take a period of adjustment before any relief will be felt. The new correct alignment positioning can be uncomfortable at first but should disappear after a short time while the body adjusts and stabilizes to the new positioning.

THE USE & EFFECTIVENESS OF SOLOMON’S SEAL

The issue of Runner’s Knee is a perfect example of the value of Solomon’s Seal. The herb works well on connective tissues, bones, bursae and synovium, cartilage, and associated inflammation.

Effect on Inflammation

The allantoin in Solomon’s Seal acts as an anti-inflammatory that is good not only for joints but also for inflammations of the stomach and bowels. It soothes irritated or damaged tissues and reduces general inflammation. The mucilaginous qualities help to soothe and ease gastric irritation. The value of Solomon’s Seal cannot be underestimated in those instances where NSAIDs (specifically aspirin) damage the lining (or mucosa) of the digestive tract primarily in the stomach and upper intestine. This damage can result in an ulcer or intestinal bleeding.

Effect on Soft Connective Tissues

An effective knee support

The soft connective tissues surrounding muscles, tendons and ligaments that are damaged/injured often results in inflammation, swelling and edema. It should be understood that excessive out-of-balance tensions on the muscles, tendons, and ligaments can cause unnatural pressures and therefore bony overgrowth into the joint spaces and surrounding tissues. Solomon’s Seal appears to “read” and correct these tension imbalances, working to repair injured tissues while leaving little or no scar tissue. For example, if a tendon is read to be too loose, the tension will be tightened; too tight, the tension will be loosened.

Effect on Synovial Fluid Between Joints

It is speculated that Solomon’s Seal stimulates the body to produce cortisone. A similar belief is that it acts on the synovial glands improving the production of synovial fluid and thus lubrication between cartilage-capped joints (knees, hips, shoulders, elbows, fingers, etc). This synovial fluid is slippery and somewhat viscous (it’s been described as “egg-like”), and provides the lubrication so that the ever- moving joints do so freely and don’t abrade or wear at each other. Solomon’s Seal appears to resolve the sensation of friction, grinding, or clicking in joints.

In addition to merely lubricating the joints, Solomon’s Seal softens the outer surface of the cartilage. The joint itself is held in place by tendons, which connect bones and muscles, and ligaments, that connect the bones to bones. Synovial joints exist interdependently with the muscles that surround them. Not only do the joints respond to the will of the muscles, the muscles are also responsive to the goings on in the joints. In any case, the plant possesses a mucilagenous quality that coats and lubricates enflamed tissues while reducing friction and irritation. Solomon’s Seal also helps restore pliancy to tendons and ligaments by supplying moisture to them if they are atrophied. It is specifically indicated for tendonitis and other repetitive motion injuries.

ENHANCING SOLOMON’S SEAL’S EFFECTIVENESS WITH OTHER HERBS

In our intense study and observation of Solomon’s Seal’s palliative effects on various conditions, we have been inspired to integrate its use with other esteemed healing herbs. In our Cortesia Solomon’s Seal Tincture, Formula #1 – Arthritis & Joint Repair, we have combined it with Gravel Root and Pleurisy Root. Gravel Root is specifically indicated for arthritis for it brings minerals into and out of solution, hence its use as a remedy to dissolve and remove deposits in joints. Pleurisy Root is indicated in cases of acute inflammation, arthritis, bursitis, lack of lubrication, or clicking in the joints.

Our Cortesia Solomon’s Seal Tincture, Formula #3 – Cartilage & Tissue Repair is integrated with the highly respected Horsetail plant. Horsetail’s high silica content helps to rebuild damaged cartilage and structures. It strengthens connective tissue, bones, cartilage, mucous membranes, arteries, skin, and other tissue.

Of course, straight Solomon’s Seal works to harmonize, feed, lubricate, and tighten or loosen (as needed) tendons, ligaments, attachments, and joints. It is also a valuable connective tissue anti-inflammatory, and is known to help moderate the symptoms of osteoarthritis. It has many other benefits described in other articles on our website and blog.

THE USE OF SOLOMON’S SEAL SALVE & LINIMENT TO REDUCE INFLAMMATION & PAIN

Reducing inflammation and soothing the pain of tendonitis can be done topically if a pain reliever has the ability to penetrate the skin barrier and contains anti-inflammatory agents. A topical formula will not only relieve pain or inflammation, but also dilate the blood vessels (if it contains natural menthol). This allows for relief of tendonitis, without causing any stiffening of the tissue.

Our Cortesia Solomon’s Seal Acute & Chronic Injury Salve is a very effective topical salve, especially when used with our Cortesia Quick Relief Liniment and Solomon’s Seal Tincture, or any of the above mentioned Solomon’s Seal formulas. The salve contains Arnica, Calendula, Comfrey, Horsetail, Mullein, St. John’s Wort and Solomon’s Seal root. Unlike most topicals, however, the herbal properties in our salve permeate deeply through the skin layers into the cellular level of affected tissues.

A good therapeutic liniment is invaluable for pain relief, inflammation and swelling. It is important that it also directs herbs to deeper tissue levels. Our Cortesia Quick Relief Liniment is formulated with the following ingredients (organic) for deep absorption: Witch Hazel, Isopropyl Alcohol, Solomon’s Seal, Comfrey, Calendula, St. John’s Wort, Rosemary, Arnica, Cayenne, Horsetail, Menthol. It can be used regularly during healing and is especially cost-effective for the comforting benefits it provides.

The 3-Step Method:
Combining a Liniment, Salve & Tincture for Healing

When using herbal interventions or products such as a tincture, salve or liniment, we believe that a 3-Step Method is an effective way to address accompanying tissue inflammations, muscle tenderness, or possible joint discomfort. We address this method below, demonstrating the use of our Cortesia Solomon’s Seal tincture, salve and liniment.

STEP 1
Apply Cortesia Quick Relief Liniment topically several times daily, as needed, in area(s) where pain or discomfort is occurring. Apply morning, afternoon, and evening OR before and after periods of activity and again before bed. This will provide short-term relief so that certain activities are less painful or so that you can get to sleep. It is important to firmly rub the liniment for several minutes to stimulate blood circulation in the effected tissue or joint area. This works very well for arthritic conditions or joint issues to increase flexibility. Of course, use lighter pressure for a sprain, bruise, very sore muscle, or painful area.

Cortesia Quick Relief Liniment ingredients (organic): Witch Hazel, Isopropyl Alcohol, Solomon’s Seal, Comfrey, Calendula, St. John’s Wort, Rosemary, Arnica, Cayenne, Horsetail, Menthol

STEP 2
Apply Cortesia Acute & Chronic Injury Salve (or Cortesia Healing Salve) externally to injured area twice daily, morning and evening (apply after the liniment). Wrap or bandage as needed to protect clothing. This is an important long-term method of healing for bruises, strains, sprains, aches, symptoms of arthritis, damaged muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints, etc. It perfectly compliments the liniment.

Cortesia Acute & Chronic Injury Salve ingredients: Solomon’s Seal, Arnica, Calendula, Comfrey, St. John’s Wort, Mullein, Horsetail

Note: After applying a liniment or salve, it is very useful to simply lay your hand(s) lightly over the affected area for a few minutes.

One of the most common injuries among sports participants and manual laborers is “tennis elbow”, a form of tendonitis associated with elbow pain. With proper care, lifestyle modification, and nonsurgical intervention this painful condition can heal itself. However, the symptoms must be recognized soon for optimal healing. This article discusses the causes and symptoms of tennis elbow, as well as suggested intervention, including the use of the herb Solomon’s Seal in tincture, salve and liniment form.

WHAT IS TENNIS ELBOW?

The exact cause of tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis) is unkown. It is generally thought to be due to small tears of the tendons that attach forearm muscles to the arm bone at the elbow joint. The muscle group involved, the wrist extensors, function to cock the wrist back. Specifically, the extensor carpi radialis brevis is implicated in causing the symptoms of tennis elbow.

In layperson terms, the elbow is meant to allow people to extend and then contract their arms. However, repetitive use or aging can cause a degenerative process (short or long term) resulting in the irritation, swelling, and inflammation of the elbow tendons. The symptoms may be the result of an incomplete healing response in an area that does not have good blood flow and therefore has difficulty accessing nutrition and oxygen necessary for healing. This leads to degeneration of the tendon causing small tears. As people age, the elasticity in their elbow tendons can degenerate and become brittle.

WHO IS SUSCEPTIBLE?

The pain associated with tennis elbow usually has a gradual onset, but it may also come on suddenly, effecting about 75 percent of those experiencing it. Most sufferers (men and women equally) are between the ages of 35 and 65 years old, but younger people suffer as well, if involved in particular repetitive-motion activities. Anyone can be affected (not just tennis players!), even a person experiencing the constant yanking of a dog on a leash. However, tennis elbow is most commonly seen in two groups of people:

Manual Laborers
People who work with their hands are at greater risk of developing elbow tendonitis. Plumbers, painters, roofers, and carpenters are susceptible. Similarly, people involved in factory work, road construction, yard and landscape maintenance, and gardening can experience elbow discomfort.

Sports Participants
Sports participants, especially racquet sport players, are prone to developing tennis elbow. About a third of regular tennis players experience tennis elbow at some point in their careers. In addition to racquet sports, elbow tendonitis is seen in golfers, fencers, weightlifters, rock climbers and other sports enthusiasts.

There are several ways elbow tendonitis can occur. A sudden increase in the amount of activity, exercise, or movement in the arms is a significant cause. People who work in factories are usually prone because of this. Various injuries, such as a fall, can also cause elbow tendonitis. Finally, athletes who repeatedly use their arms for sports or strengthening are susceptible and are encouraged to gradually condition their tendons in order to avoid elbow problems.

SYMPTOMS

Tennis elbow syndrome is experienced as pain on the outside of the elbow that is worsened by grasping objects (even a coffee mug!) and cocking back the wrist. The most common symptoms of tennis elbow are:

Pain over the outside of the elbow

Pain when lifting objects

Pain radiating down the forearm

Inability to carry objects or use your arm

Elbow pain that occurs at night or while resting

Elbow pain that persists beyond a few days

Inability to straighten or flex your arm

Swelling or significant bruising around the joint or arm

Any other unusual symptoms

If elbow tendonitis symptoms are recognized and treated soon after they begin, there is usually a better chance of the tendons healing quickly. Symptoms can also include pain behind the elbow joint after exercise, feeling pain whenever the arm is extended, or feeling a burning sensation after exerting the arm. Stiffness might also be experienced while trying to bend the arm against resistance.

Knowing the limits of one’s body is very important when trying to prevent elbow tendonitis. Elbow tendonitis is usually less prevalent in those who have, over time, conditioned their tendons to be flexible. If a person tries to push their body beyond what it is capable of doing, they will be more susceptible to injury.

METHODS OF TREATMENT

Elbow braces can help with elbow tendonitis

Successful treatment of elbow tendonitis usually involves being able to relieve pain, and reduce tendon and joint inflammation. In some mild cases, resting the tendons can allow them to heal on their own. Nonsurgical treatment is effective in over 90% of sufferers. Treatment options include the following:

Rest & Lifestyle Modification
R.I.C.E (meaning Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation) is a common treatment for many injuries and works well with tennis elbow. At the same time, it is useful to evaluate and modify the use of equipment (sports or vocational) including the mechanics and technique of grasp, stroke and the like.

Elbow Brace & Conditioning Exercises
An elbow orthosis (elbow clasp) can be worn during activity to redirect the pull of misaligned muscles. Warming up before doing any form of work, exercise, or athletic activity can help tendon elasticity. This can, in turn, lower the chances of inflammation or injury. Light stretching can gradually be implemented if the tendons start to improve. If discomfort is experienced afterward, however, a longer period of rest usually is suggested. Exercises to strengthen your forearm muscles and elbow are also beneficial. These may include the use of light weights or a small palm-sized squeeze ball. Simple exercises can help your muscles better absorb the energy of sudden physical stress.

Anti-inflammatory Medications
For pain relief, over-the-counter nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, others) or naproxen sodium (Aleve, Anaprox) can be used. Use as directed or in consultation with your medical advisor. Word of caution: Prolonged use can cause gastrointestinal problems, ulcers, heartburn, interfer with other medications, etc.

Herbal Intervention (tincture, salve and/or liniment)
The use of herbal formulas is one of the most natural and effective ways to relieve pain, reduce inflammation, and assist in healing muscles, joints and connective tissues. There are generally little or no side effects. The strategic use of the herb Solomon’s Seal is discussed below.

The soft connective tissues surrounding muscles, tendons and ligaments that are damaged/injured often results in inflammation, swelling and edema. It should be understood that excessive out-of-balance tensions on the muscles, tendons, and ligaments can cause unnatural pressures and therefore bony overgrowth into the joint spaces and surrounding tissues. Solomon’s Seal appears to “read” and correct these tension inbalances, working to repair injured tissues while leaving little or no scar tissue.

EFFECT ON SYNOVIAL FLUID

It is speculated that Solomon’s Seal stimulates the body to produce cortisone. A similar belief is that it acts on the synovial glands improving the production of synovial fluid and thus lubrication between cartilage-capped joints (knees, hips, shoulders, elbows, fingers, etc). This synovial fluid is slippery and somewhat viscous (it’s been described as “egglike”), and provides the lubrication so that the ever- moving joints do so freely and don’t abrade or wear at each other.

The Use of Solomon’s Seal Salve and Liniment to Reduce Inflammation & Pain

Did you know that some foods actually leach minerals, such as Calcium, right out of the bone, including cartilage and joint areas? Some foods also block the bone’s ability to regenerate and strengthen itself. The foods you eat should be providing the nutrients to build strong bones — keeping them viable, including their associated cartilage, tendons, ligaments, tendons, bursae, synovial fluid, muscles, nerves, etc. — not sap them or kill them off!

It doesn’t matter what form of wellness intervention you engage in — medications, herbal formulas (tinctures, homeopathics, supplements, and the like), exercise, etc. — certain foods can work against your body’s ability to heal itself. They often leach nutrients out of your body’s systems, or block the body’s ability to store and use them.

If you have issues related to bones, joints, connective tissues, and the like — if these issues show themselves as arthritis, joint pain, osteoarthritis, cartilage degeneration, aching, stiffness, etc. — then you need to look at ways that your diet can aid you, not make things worse! It may be necessary to minimize ingestion of certain foods.

The Importance of Calcium

Did you know that 99% of your body’s calcium is stored in your bones and teeth? This calcium makes up your bone bank. Calcium is “deposited” and “withdrawn” from your bone bank daily, based on your body’s need for calcium. If your daily diet is low in calcium, calcium is “withdrawn” from your bone bank. Bone is broken down to keep your blood calcium level normal. This happens because calcium, besides aiding the bone system, plays a critical role in supporting your body’s vital functions; such as controlling your blood pressure and maintaining your heart beat.

6 BONE-KILLING FOODS

Salt

According to federal dietary guidelines you should not ingest more than 2300 milligrams of salt per day. However, MOST PEOPLE EAT DOUBLE THE SALT EVERY DAY! How is this possible? It’s these types of PROCESSED foods that account for 75% of your sodium intake (table salt provides very little), so AVOID or minimize them:

· Canned foods such as soups, vegetables, sauces, spaghetti, etc.

· Frozen meals, entrees, etc.

· Deli meats

· Pizza

· Fast food (especially burgers, fries and shakes), restaurants, cafeterias

Why Salt is a Bone Killer: It saps Calcium from the bones, weakening them over time. For every 2,300 milligrams of sodium you take in, you lose about 40 milligrams of calcium, dietitians say. One study compared postmenopausal women who ate a high-salt diet with those who didn’t, and the ones who ate a lot of salt lost more bone minerals. If you are young and eating a high salt diet, your bones are actually aging and degenerating faster than you! Similarly, any amount of extra weight you carry needs to be supported by strong bones, so a high salt diet is actually making them weaker and more fragile, thereby increasing the potential for injury.

What to do: Limit or avoid the above processed foods — they are literally crippling you. Eat fresh foods (vegetables and fruits) that contain natural traces of sodium as part of their nutrient-richness. Cut back on processed sauces and condiments (soya, tamari, catsup, dressings, cooking sauces) that are naturally high in salts and sugars and used in home cooking. Don’t overdo sport drinks and electrolyte-regenerating liquds like Gatorade, and the like.

SOFT DRINKS

Soft drinks are the preferred drink of most people, and — one of the BIGGEST BONE KILLERS! Just by changing your dependency or preference for a carbonated drink can reap huge rewards, both physically and in financial savings at the check-out.

Why Soft Drinks are a Bone Killer: That fizzy quality in soda is from phosphoric acid — it specifically increases the rate at which calcium is excreted in the urine. In other words, it saps the available calcium in tissues and organs and blood, depleting it naturally when you pee. Also consider that soft drinks have no bone-building nutrients, so they fill you up and satisfy your thirst, providing unhealthy amounts of sugar and empty calories with absolutely no benefits for health!

What to do: When you’re tempted to reach for a soft drink, instead try milk, calcium- and vitamin D-fortified orange juice, or a fruit smoothie made with yogurt. Or just drink water when you’re thirsty, and eat a diet high in bone-building nutrients.

CAFFEINE

Caffeine is a bone killer just like the phosphoric acid in soft drinks, and salt: it leaches calcium from bones. This is a scientific fact in spite of any research that may proclaim certain health benefits of caffeinated liquids.

Why Caffeine is a Bone Killer: The phytochemicals in caffeine move via the blood stream into calcium rich bones setting up a leaching action. For every 100 milligrams of caffeine (the amount in a small to medium-sized cup of coffee), you lose 6 milligrams of calcium. This may not be much, but it adds up if multiple cups of coffe, tea or other caffeinated drinks (sodas, energy drinks) are part of one’s dietstyle.

What to Do: Reasonably reasses the value of caffeine in your liquids, and the quantity you consume. Substitute fresh juices, milks or water, decaffeinated teas, etc.

ALCOHOL

Alcohol is a deal-breaker in your life for numerous reasons, if it is not drunk intelligently and in moderation. Nutritionally, however, ALCOHOL IS A BONE BREAKER because it is a CALCIUM- BLOCKER.

Why Alcohol is a Bone Killer: Every bone has bone-building cells called osteoblasts. Osteoblasts are always working to regenerate, rebuild and remodel the bones every day. Alcohol prevents osteoblasts from doing their job by preventing any bone-building minerals eaten from being absorbed. The calcium is blocked, resulting in weaker bones, or slow healing and recovery from fractures.

What to do: Limit your drinking to one drink a day, whether that’s wine, beer, or hard alcohol.

HYDROGENATED OILS

Strong bones needs Vitamin K, but HYDROGENATION IS A BONE KILLER by sapping Vitamin K out of oils rich in it — oils most often used in commercial baking and processed foods (frozen or canned).

Why Hydrogenated Oils are a Bone Killer: The process of hydrogenation turns liquid vegetable oil into solid oils that are used in most store-bought foods such as bakery items and frozen foods. Every package lists the hydrogenated oils in the ingredients, so it’s not difficult to spot. These oils are stripped of the necessary Vitamin K that helps build and rebuild bones.

What to do: First, limit the role of processed foods in your diet. Second, read the labels. Third, adjust your diet: eat green leafy vegetables that are naturally loaded with Vitamin K (spinach, chard, kale, lettuces, collards, etc), and switch to Vitamin K-rich oils like canola and olive oil. Above all, eat your greens!

VITAMIN A

Most modern diets are too high in Vitamin A, which is ingested naturally in foods and in multivitamins to aid in vision and the immune system. 5000 IUs is plenty (perhaps too much), according to dietary guidelnes. However, Vitamin A is bountiful in eggs, most dairy products (full-fat), liver and vitamin-fortified foods and drinks. In its way, too much Vitamin A is a BONE KILLER.

Why Vitamin A is a Bone Killer: Too much can be harmful, for Vitamin A in excess actually weakens the cellular structure of bones. Postmenopausal women, in particular, seem to be susceptible to vitamin A overload. Studies show that women whose intake was higher than 5,000 IUs had more than double the fracture rate of women whose intake was less than 1,600 IUs a day.

What to do: Switch to low-fat or nonfat dairy products only, and eat egg whites rather than whole eggs (all the vitamin A is in the yolk). Also check your multivitamin, and if it’s high in vitamin A, switch to one that isn’t.

PROPER DIET & HERBAL REMEDIES — A NATURAL WAY TO BONE HEALTH

When a person decides to use natural interventions that are plant-based, like tinctures, salves, teas, and liniments, and the like, it is critical to reassess dietstyle preferences. What we eat can hinder or help our health, and affect the discomforts felt in our body. Bone health is fundamental to aging gracefully, and we need to be aware of the basic needs of our bones to regenerate their strength and flexibility.

Herbal interventions have less potential success if they are blocked by dietary habits that are harming bones and tissues. Herbal healing aids also work well when the body is actively maintained with regular weight-bearing exercise, such as walking. Exercise stimulates blood circulation, re-oxygenates tissues and blood supply, keeps muscles supple, joints flexible, and tones the body. Even if fairly immobile and in convalescence, it is important to move and flex some parts of the body.

We always recommend that clients who use our tinctures, salves, and other products, also assess their dietstyle and make necessary adjustments. Furthermore, we advise increasing fresh water intake, ingesting at least 2-3 quarts per day. The above suggestions constantly serve to flush the body of toxins and excessive elements, thereby allowing the herbs to be more quickly absorbed into the body.

In other articles, we share more specific nutritional information; including what vegetables and fruit you can grow in your own garden for increased health and well-being.

The result is a release of blood from the tiny capillaries under the skin. The characteristic bluish-black mark on the skin lightens in color and eventually fades as the blood is absorbed by the tissues and carried away. The ability to heal quickly from a bruise is dependent upon both a person’s general health and diet, and the form of therapeutic intervention. These subjects are explored in this article, with special emphasis given to the effectiveness of using Solomon’s Seal in some form — tincture, salve or liniment — and formulated with other helpful herbs.

Bruising usually occurs as a result of an injury. Athletes, outdoor recreational enthusiasts, and people in vocations that use the body a lot commonly receive bruises. An ankle sprain is often accompanied by bruising. Bruising can also occur spontaneously and is an indication of an allergic reaction, or more serious disease. Some people even bruise more easily than others — an indication of fragile capillaries, poor health or an inability to create collagen.

Research suggests that the leading cause of frequent bruising, or the body’s inability to heal a bruise in a timely manner, is a deficiency in one or more nutrients. The elderly, for example, may be susceptible to bruising because of a generally poor diet. Dieters who have lost a substantial amount of weight are also at risk of developing bruises. The reason is that they have many capillaries that were needed to supply blood to their larger body mass, and now a lesser body mass leaves the extra capillaries exposed.

The remedy to be healthy enough to heal a bruise, or to prevent a serious one is simple: Maintain a diet that supplies certain nutrients, primarily vitamin C, vitamin E, vitamin K, bioflavonoids, and zinc. A daily supplement can do the trick, but it is always better to ingest these nutrients in their raw state in a healthy diet containing fruits and vegetables and nuts.

THE VALUE OF VITAMINS C, E, K, BIOFLAVONOIDS & ZINC

Vitamin C (U.S. RDA: 60mg) helps protect against bruising by strengthening capillary walls. As an antioxidant, it is depleted when the body is trying to rid itself of pollutants, allergens or drugs. A vitamin C deficiency may be caused by several factors:

Eating too few fruits and vegetables

Taking drugs which destroys this vitamin

Long-time stress from illness, frustration or depression

Smoking (one cigarette can deplete the body of 25 mg of vitamin C)

Frequent emotional outbursts such as anger

Exposure to pollutants, allergens or heavy metals

Bioflavonoids that naturally occur in vitamin C (Hesperidin, Citrin, Rutin, Flavones, Flavonals, Calechin and Quercetin) are essential in correcting the tendency toward bruising. In particular, a deficiency in the bioflavonoid Hesperidin (sometimes called vitamin P) has been linked with abnormal capillary weakness.

Foods to take for vitamin C (non-meat, unprocessed): Citrus fruits and juices, strawberries, cantaloupe, tomatoes, broccoli, green vegetables (lettuce, peppers, etc.), potatoes.

Vitamin E (U.S. RDA: 30IU) works synergistically with vitamin C to repair tissues.

Foods to take for vitamin E (non-meat, unprocessed): Green vegetables, legumes.

Vitamin K (U.S. RDA: 70-140mg) is made in the intestines, but can be depleted by antibiotics that kill the friendly bacteria that synthesize it. Supplementing your diet with leafy, green vegetables is a good way to add this vitamin to your system. It helps the capillaries heal themselves by sealing the blood leakage. Vitamin K also supports the body’s ability to reabsorb the blood in surrounding tissues, thereby helping fade the bruise and restoring the skin to normal color.

Foods to take for vitamin K (non-meat, unprocessed): Kale, mixed leafy lettuce, spinach, cabbage.

Zinc (U.S. RDA, older children to adults: 8-12mg) is helpful in maintaining healthy connective tissue, and a deficiency can lead to bruising.

Foods to take for Zinc (non-meat, unprocessed): lima beans, chickpeas, split peas, green peas, cashews, pecans, almonds, poached egg.

THE VALUE OF HEALING HERBS

There are several plants that are especially effective in treating bruises. Their therapeutic value has been known and used for thousands of years. As herbalists and wellness practitioners, we have regularly integrated the following herbs into our tinctures, salves and liniment, as discussed later in this article.

St. Johns Wort
The early Greek herbalists considered St. Johns Wort an effective herb for healing wounds. It was used to dress sword cuts in the Middle Ages. Modern analysis of the plant has shown the plant to have antibacterial and astringent properties, both qualities useful in the speedy healing of cuts and wounds. It is very effective in a salve or liniment.

Comfrey
Comfrey is among the oldest herbal remedies for skin problems, used to promote the healing of tissue and bone and reduce swelling, effectively speeding up the healing process. Comfrey’s healing powers have been attributed to its high content of allantoin, a substance that promotes the growth of tissue, bone and cartilage, both externally and internally. It is very useful in a salve or liniment.

Arnica
Long valued as a folk remedy for bruises and sprains, Arnica has great pain-relieving, antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties. Although widely used in forms of pills (as a homeopathic) and tinctures, it is best reserved for use on the skin, as in a salve, cream or liniment.

Calendula
As an anti-inflammatory and vulnerary, it is excellent for bruises, strains, skin inflammations, burns, sunburn, and external wounds that are tender, red, and swollen. Calendula works well in a salve or liniment.

Witch Hazel
Witch Hazel is an all-purpose anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal, and is soothing and cooling. It is an excellent natural herbal carrier for the other herbal ingredients.

Solomon’s Seal (polygonatum biflorum): Works to harmonize, feed, lubricate, and tighten or loosen (as needed) tendons, ligaments, muscles, attachments, and joints. It is a valuable connective tissue anti-inflammatory, and is known to help moderate the symptoms of osteoarthritis, repetitive use injuries, connective tissue damage, and bruising. This “workhorse” herb is excellent in a tincture, salve or liniment.

The 3-Step Method:
Combining a Liniment, Salve & Tincture for Healing of Bruises

When using herbal interventions or products such as a tincture, salve or liniment, we believe that a 3-Step Method is an effective way to address treat bruising and accompanying tissue inflammations, muscle tenderness, or possible joint discomfort. We address this method below, demonstrating the use of our Cortesia Solomon’s Seal tincture, salve and liniment.

STEP 1

Apply Cortesia Quick Relief Linimenttopically several times daily, as needed, in area(s) where pain or discomfort is occurring.

Cortesia Healing Salve ingredients: Solomon’s Seal, Bloodroot, Calendula, Chickweed, Prunella, St. John’s Wort, Yarrow, Comfrey, Lemon Balm, Oregon Grape, Plantain, Usnea/Oak Moss

Note: After applying a liniment or salve, it is very useful to simply lay your hand(s) lightly over the affected area for a few minutes. This form of “touch healing therapy” is therapeutic (see our Blog article Solomon’s Seal and the Healing Effects of Touch to understand more). You can feel the warm or cooling sensation of your injury; you can also mentally visualize healing currents.

STEP 3:

Consider taking Cortesia Solomon’s Seal Tincture internally several times daily. Solomon’s Seal works to harmonize, feed, lubricate, and tighten or loosen (as needed) tendons, ligaments, muscles, attachments, and joints. It is a valuable connective tissue anti-inflammatory, and is known to help moderate the symptoms of osteoarthritis, repetitive use injuries, and connective tissue damage.

SUMMARY

Bruises occur as a matter of life — they are unpreventable. However, we can increase our body’s ability to heal from a bruise by insuring that we have a nutrient-rich diet that supplies us with vitamins C, E, K, bioflavonoids, and Zinc. These nutrients are optimally used by the body if they occur in fresh fruits, vegetables and nuts.

A cold compress upon a bruise is especially soothing. However, the easiest medical intervention is with the use of a therapeutic herb that is often administered as a topical salve/cream, liniment, or tincture. The best salves and liniments have a mixture of herbs that work together synergistically for optimal therapeutic intervention — they penetrate dermal layers for deeper tissue healing, are anti-inflammatory, stimulate healthy blood circulation, and are cooling to sensitive tissues. Although they can be taken alone, when administered together, a liniment, salve, and tincture hasten the healing process.

An herbal liniment is a medicinal liquid formulated with herbs in a base of rubbing alcohol, Witch Hazel, or oil. It is firmly rubbed into the skin to provide temporary, fast-acting pain relief for sore and inflamed joints, muscles, tendons, and ligaments. It may also alleviate some of the discomfort of arthritis, bursitis, circulation problems, old injuries, rheumatism, sprains, strains, bumps, and bruises.

Liniments are extremely practical, having been used for thousands of years, often giving necessary short-term relief from pain, discomfort and stiffness within minutes. For those with joint health issues (stiffness, inflammation, pain), an effective liniment is invaluable. Athletes and outdoor recreation enthusiasts, from runners to gardeners, often use a liniment before and after exercise to keep muscles and joints loose and flexible. It goes without saying: Every medicine chest should have a bottle of liniment.

We have taken great care in formulating our Cortesia Quick Relief Liniment. The selected organic herbs are known for their individual and synergistic therapeutic value. They are steeped in a Witch Hazel and Isopropyl Alcohol base for many weeks for optimal distillation of each herb’s chemical constituents. We hand-bottle each liniment on demand from the steeping menstrum base to ensure highest and freshest therapeutic qualities.

Although liniments are not designed to provide long-term relief from chronic pain or discomfort, they work especially well when combined with herbal salves and/or tinctures, which are more lasting over time in their healing effects. We discuss this healing strategy thoroughly below.

HOW CORTESIA QUICK RELIEF LINIMENT WORKS

A liniment has two main components working together: the base (“carrier”) and the herbs. The most effective base is alcohol, specifically Isopropyl Alcohol and/or Witch Hazel. The alcohol enables deep skin absorption and a thorough delivery of the medicinal herbs. (Note: Many over-the-counter liniments have very high alcohol content and only a small percentage of penetrating herbs. Such high alcohol content can cause an allergic reaction, i.e. a skin rash, hives, redness, itching, dryness, or slight burning sensation).

Liniments have been used for centuries

Our liniment does not contain oil, is non-staining, does not dry out or irritate the skin, and is easy to spray on. We use double-distilled organic Witch Hazel that is only 14% alcohol, combined with Isopropyl Alcohol, therefore assuring safe use on skin without irritation.

The herbal component of our liniment has been carefully created to maximize each herb’s therapeutic qualities. The intent is not only to provide short-term relief, but also to allow the alcohol base to carry the herbs deeper into sub-dermal and tissues layers for broader and longer-lasting effectiveness. For this reason, the formulation of our Cortesia Quick Relief Liniment works excellently when accompanied by the use of a deep penetrating salve (like our Cortesia Acute & Chronic Injury Salve), and/or a tincture.

When a liniment is sprayed onto the skin, it is important to firmly (as best as possible without causing pain to tender areas) rub the area for a few minutes. The alcohol will quickly evaporate from the skin, but the rubbing will move the herbs into the cellular levels and increase blood circulation. Increased flexibility or relief in the affected area will be felt within moments and should last up to an hour or more. You can do this procedure before and/or after activity, as needed throughout the day.

HERBAL INGREDIENTS IN CORTESIA QUICK RELIEF LINIMENT

There are many possible ingredients that can be used in a liniment. Indeed, for many centuries, liniments have been the cornerstone of folk remedies and have been subjected to much experimentation of herbal ingredients. Ideally, the different herbs will work together synergistically to treat a variety of conditions. For example, Solomon’s Seal root works particularly well when combined with Horsetail. Similarly, Rosemary essential oil (made from the flowers) draws out different healing properties than Rosemary tincture, but when combined, the oil and the tincture become especially effective.

Some herbs are warming and some are cooling. A liniment, therefore, can be formulated to be only warming or cooling, or both at the same time, as described below.

Warming Properties of a Liniment

Rosemary has a warming quality

Certain herbs act as warming, circulatory stimulants. Such plants are especially helpful for arthritis and chronic injuries that may be characterized by pain and stiffness aggravated by exertion and/or cold weather. Warming herbs are very useful in a liniment because they stimulate local blood circulation and thus aid in kick-starting the body’s own healing response to an injury, whether it be chronic or acute. Examples of warning herbs are cayenne, rosemary, ginger, and black pepper.

Cooling Properties of a Liniment

Mint (menthol) has a cooling quality

Cooling herbs are useful for hot, inflamed conditions, and moderate swelling and inflammation. These herbs are useful for relief of sprains, tendonitis and ligament issues, bruises, or traumatic injury, such as a bone fracture, all of which cause inflammation of surrounding tissues. Peppermint and menthol are examples of cooling herbs.

Here is a list of the herbs we use in our liniment, and their therapeutic effectiveness.

Witch Hazel base: All-purpose anti-inflammatory, soothing and cooling, also anti-bacterial and anti-fungal. It is an excellent natural herbal carrier for the other herbal ingredients. We use double-distilled organic Witch Hazel that is 86% WH and only 14% alcohol.

Isopropyl Alcohol: Acts as a co-carrier for the other herbal constituents and rapidly evaporates from the skin after it has done its job. The 91% alcohol content insures the best extraction of the therapeutic constituents of herbs we use and the deepest possible penetration of the finished liniment. An all-purpose antiseptic and disinfectant, Isopropyl Alcohol is often used for rubdowns after physical exertion and for general massage purposes.

Solomon’s Seal (polygonatum biflorum): Works to harmonize, feed, lubricate, and tighten or loosen (as needed) tendons, ligaments, muscles, attachments, and joints. It is a valuable connective tissue anti-inflammatory, and is known to help moderate the symptoms of osteoarthritis, repetitive use injuries, and connective tissue damage.

Comfrey Root (symphytum officinale): As a vulnerary, it kick-starts the body’s localized natural healing processes almost immediately. Exceptional ability to heal wounds, ulcers, and fractures, and moderate pain. Aids in rapid cell regeneration and bone repair, promotes healing of damaged tendons, ligaments, and swollen or inflamed tissue. Good for soothing a sore back, aching feet, or reducing the pain of arthritis or rheumatism.

Calendula (calendula officinalis): As an anti-inflammatory and vulnerary, it is excellent for bruises, strains, skin inflammations, burns, sunburn, and external wounds that are tender, red, and swollen.

St. John’s Wort (hypericum perforatum): Relaxes sore muscles and aids in healing the protective layer (myelin sheath) around the nerve core fibers. It is effective for general pain relief, as an anti-inflammatory, and to speed the healing of varicose veins, bruises, and burns.

Rosemary Essential Oil (from flowers – rosmarinus officinalis): Helps strengthen the capillaries and has a rejuvenating and toning effect on the skin. Useful for mild muscular pain, rheumatism, circulation problems, excess cellulite, and arthritis. Contains camphor, a stimulant that increases body heat in cold, tense, and arthritic joints. Eases stiffness in the body caused by fluid retention in muscles and other soft tissues. Also combats poor circulation by increasing the blood flow around the body. Suitable for dry, mature skin. Adds a pleasing fragrance to the liniment.

Rosemary Leaf (rosmarinus officinalis): Among a host of medicinal uses with a long history of use, rosemary is instrumental for relieving muscle pain, stimulating the circulatory and nervous systems, and promoting increased blood and lymph flow. The terpenoids in rosemary, such as rosmarinic acid, rosmanol, carnosol and ursolic acid provide effective anti-inflammatory benefits. The rosmarinic acid within rosemary also functions as a wide-ranging antioxidant and helps fight free radical damage.

Arnica (arnica montana): Helps remove congestion by dilating the blood vessels, supporting the circulatory system in more effective disposal of waste tissue and reconstruction of healthy tissue. It is an effective pain reliever and anti-inflammatory, and is useful for muscle spasms, bruises, sprains, and strains.

Cayenne Pepper (capsicum annuum): Reduces inflammation, soothes stiffness and pain. It is considered a warming ingredient because it helps stimulate local blood circulation to bring vital energy and healing to the affected area. Cayenne is a catalyst for Comfrey, helping the skin to absorb the Comfrey.

Horsetail (equisetum arvense): Horsetail’s high silica content helps to rebuild damaged cartilage and structures. It strengthens connective tissue, bones, cartilage, mucous membranes, arteries, skin, and other tissue. It is especially useful for misaligned joints restricted in their movement, as may be the case with arthritis or joint injuries.

Menthol Crystals: A cooling ingredient that is refreshing, aromatic, and helps relieve muscular aches and pains. Extracted from mint, menthol is widely used in health and beauty aids.

THE 3-STEP METHOD:
COMBINING A LINIMENT, SALVE & TINCTURE FOR DEEP HEALING

When using herbal interventions or products such as a tincture, salve or liniment, we believe that a 3-Step Method is the best way to address many of the types of acute and chronic injuries mentioned above. (Note: This approach should never take the place of other practical strategies such as rest, support or elevation of injury, increasing water intake, adjustment of diet and nutrition, etc.)

STEP 1:

Apply Cortesia Quick-Relief Liniment topically several times daily, as needed, in area(s) where pain or discomfort is occurring.

STEP 2:

Apply Cortesia Acute and Chronic Injury Salve externally to injured area twice daily, morning and evening (apply after the liniment). Wrap or bandage as needed to protect clothing. This is an important long-term method of healing for strains, sprains, aches, symptoms of arthritis, damaged muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints, etc. It perfectly compliments the liniment.

Note: After applying a liniment or salve, it is very useful to simply lay your hand(s) lightly over the affected area for a few minutes. This form of “touch healing therapy” is therapeutic (see our article Solomon’s Seal and the Healing Effects of Touch to understand more). You can feel the warm or cooling sensation of your injury; you can also mentally visualize healing currents.

STEP 3:

Cortesia Solomon's Seal Tincture

Consider taking Cortesia Solomon’s Seal Tincture internally several times daily. Solomon’s Seal works to harmonize, feed, lubricate, and tighten or loosen (as needed) tendons, ligaments, muscles, attachments, and joints. It is a valuable connective tissue anti-inflammatory, and is known to help moderate the symptoms of osteoarthritis, repetitive use injuries, and connective tissue damage. Depending on your injury or condition, one of our Solomon’s Seal Formulas (described elsewhere on this site) may be appropriate — for example, the #1 Arthritis & Joint Repair, the #2 Bone-Building & Bone Repair, the #3 Cartilage & Tissue Repair, the #4 Pain & Tension Relief, or the #6 All-in-One Deep Healing Formula.

SUMMARY

We strongly believe that every medicine chest should include an effective liniment for short-term relief, and a deeper penetrating topical salve for longer therapeutic value. These externally applied interventions are invaluable for a host of conditions and injuries, as mentioned at the beginning of this article.

A tincture, taken internally, works very quickly to be absorbed into the bloodstream and transported to an effected area for deep cellular healing. We have dedicated years to understanding and witnessing the broad effectiveness of the herb Solomon’s Seal, used alone or synergistically with other complementary herbs, on a number of health conditions and injuries. For this reason we believe it too deserves a welcome place in one’s medicine cabinet.

Not everyone may be inclined to use a liniment, topical salve and/or tincture together to alleviate a health condition or injury. However, their combined therapeutic effectiveness, as discussed above, should not be undervalued.

Of course, any therapeutic intervention must also include a committed review of one’s lifestyle choices in the areas of diet, nutrition, exercise, rest, stress, loving relationships, and even one’s faith or spiritual system of belief. The blessings of health and healing to you, always.

An herbal liniment (such as our Cortesia Quick Relief Liniment) is a medicinal liquid of herbs in a base or “carrier” of rubbing alcohol, Witch Hazel, or oil that is firmly rubbed into the skin to provide temporary, fast-acting pain relief and increased blood circulation. A liniment can be used alone, however, its effectiveness is increased when part of a 3-Step Healing Strategy using an accompanying topical salve and tincture. A good therapeutic liniment is effective for the following types of conditions:

Sore and inflamed joints, muscles, tendons, and ligaments

Alleviation of the discomfort of arthritis, bursitis, and rheumatism

Circulation problems (increases blood circulation in affected area)

Sprains, strains, and bruises

Injuries or discomforts from sports, gardening, work, or recreational activities associated with the above symptoms

Other conditions that may benefit from short-term relief

Liniments are one of the oldest known natural medicinal interventions, fully using the therapeutic qualities of certain plants. They have been used for thousands of years, applied externally on humans and animals alike. Horse trainers use liniments extensively to relieve leg strains and injuries unique to horses. Athletes and sports enthusiasts often find quick relief by using a liniment. (For example, rub in a liniment briskly before and after your morning or afternoon run or strenuous workout). Similarly, people suffering from arthritis or bursitis greatly benefit from the short-term relief that a liniment provides.

Although liniments are not designed to provide long-term relief from chronic pain or discomfort, they work especially well when combined with herbal salves and/or tinctures, which are more lasting over time in their healing effects. We discuss this healing strategy thoroughly below. Massage will also enhance the effects of a liniment.

HOW LINIMENTS ARE MADE

Liniments most typically utilize an alcohol base as the menstrum, which acts as a carrier for the other ingredients.

Some liniment makers create a base that is part alcohol and part oil, resulting in a product that separates, is more difficult to spray, and constantly needs shaking. Others choose an oil base, which produces a type of liquid salve that easily spreads on the skin but may stain clothing and feel greasy.

The best liniment. We prefer a liniment that does not contain oil, is non-staining, does not dry out or irritate the skin, and is easy to spray on. A combination of Witch Hazel and Isopropyl Alcohol makes a superior carrier, or base, because it is less drying then alcohol alone. Unfortunately, most liniments on the market that contain Witch Hazel use that which is mostly alcohol (about 86%). Our liniment, as described below, uses double-distilled Witch Hazel that is only 14% alcohol, therefore assuring safe use on skin without irritation.

In short, a liniment can be made with a blend of dried herbs that are steeped in alcohol for 2-4 weeks, or longer (much like a tincture), than strained and combined with additional ingredients, such as herbal essential oils or other tinctures, if desired. The resulting liquid is the liniment.

SELECTING APPROPRIATE INGREDIENTS FOR A LINIMENT

Additionally, and depending on your condition or injury, you may not need the benefit of every ingredient in a particular liniment, but chances are that a number of the constituents will provide some level of relief. There are many liniments on the market to choose from. Oftentimes, you may need to experiment with various blends to find the right liniment for you.

Warming Properties of a Liniment

Certain herbs act as warming, circulatory stimulants. Such plants are especially helpful for arthritis and chronic injuries that may be characterized by pain and stiffness aggravated by exertion and/or cold weather. Warming herbs are very useful in a liniment because they stimulate local blood circulation and thus aid in kick-starting the body’s own healing response to an injury, whether it be chronic or acute. Examples of warning herbs are cayenne, rosemary, ginger, and black pepper.

Cooling Properties of a Liniment

Cooling herbs are useful for hot, inflamed conditions, and moderate swelling and inflammation. These herbs are useful for relief of sprains, tendonitis and ligament issues, bruises, or traumatic injury, such as a bone fracture, all of which cause inflammation of surrounding tissues. Peppermint and menthol are examples of cooling herbs.

3-STEP STRATEGY TO EFFECTIVE HEALING & PAIN RELIEF

When using herbal interventions or products such as a tincture, salve or liniment, we believe that a 3-Step Method is the best way to address many of the types of acute and chronic injuries mentioned above. (Note: This approach should never take the place of other practical strategies such as rest, support or elevation of injury, increasing water intake, etc.)

STEP 1:

Apply Cortesia Quick-Relief Liniment topically several times daily, as needed, in area(s) where pain or discomfort is occurring.

Depending on your injury or condition, one of our Solomon’s Seal Formulas may be appropriate — for example, the #1 Arthritis & Joint Repair, the #2 Bone-Building & Bone Repair, the #3 Cartilage & Tissue Repair, the #4 Pain & Tension Relief, or the #6 All-in-One Deep Healing Formula.

TWO ADDITIONAL HEALING STRATEGIES

We firmly believe that any healing and relief strategy needs to consider the therapeutic importance of increased water intake and nutritional evaluation of one’s diet, as briefly explained below.

Drink plenty of water. This is always important when faced with an acute or chronic health condition. Pure water in and of itself is very healing and rejuvenating to the body’s tissues, joints, organs and blood. Unfortunately, many people drink far less than the recommended 8 cups of water per day. Therefore, analyze your own water intake. When fighting an illness or challenging condition, you may need as much as 12 to 16 cups (3 to 4 quarts) per day.

Evaluate your overall diet and nutritional well-being. Are you eating lots of corn, wheat, gluten-rich foods, or dairy products? These foods are common yet often unknown allergens for many people. Or perhaps you have a high-fat diet that includes many highly processed foods, or your diet is high in sugar. Coffee, alcohol, and soda pop can also cause problems, and are contraindicated in many health conditions.
Basically, an allergy is an immune response, resulting in inflammation. You can take anti-inflammatory medicines, but what good will they do if your diet is not healthy? A negative response to certain foods can be exhibited anywhere in the body, because nutrients are digested, absorbed, and circulated throughout the body. This is especially true for joints and damaged tissues. Food allergies cause a wide range of problems and can be determined through the Elisa Food Allergy Panel, which measures your immune response to about 100 different foods.

Finances or availability can make it difficult to afford or obtain quantities of fresh fruits and vegetables, alternative non-gluten grains, non-caffeinated and unsweetened juices or drinks, and the like – especially if they are organic. But it is important to eat as well and as wisely as you can, within your means. Planting a garden in which you can grow some of your own produce doesn’t hurt either!

CORTESIA QUICK RELIEF LINIMENT

Our Cortesia Quick Relief Liniment is composed of all organicor wild-crafted ingredients in a base of double-distilled organic Witch Hazel (86% pure witch hazel/ 14% alcohol) and Isopropyl Alcohol (91%). As noted earlier, many Witch Hazel products on the market actually contain very little Witch Hazel, being mostly alcohol. Our Witch Hazel is the highest quality available. Remember, the higher quality the base, the more effective the liniment.

Witch Hazel base: All-purpose anti-inflammatory, soothing and cooling, also anti-bacterial and anti-fungal. It is an excellent natural herbal carrier for the other herbal ingredients.

Millions of dollars per year are spent on treatment, medications and over-the-counter interventions. There are numerous causes for joint issues — disease, accident, stress-injuries from overexertion, environmental, even nutrition and diet.

Most people have little knowledge about how their joints work, nor do they understand the mechanism behind joint pain and inflammation. This article offers a basic overview of joints, including joint pain and inflammation. It also clarifies how an herb like Solomon’s Seal works to treat joint issues and to optimize their health.

How Joints Work

Imagine your body without joints — remove all joints from toes, ankles, knees, hips, fingers, wrists, elbows, shoulders, and neck. The result is that you would simply be a stiff stick figure that could not bend, rotate, properly walk, run, sit, or function in most human ways. To understand the mystery of joints is really quite simple: a joint is formed when two bones meet. Similarly, the mechanics of joint function is simple: ligaments, tendons, bursae, cartilage and synovium all work together as a system to seamlessly give flexibility. We can call this the joint system. It is this joint system that gives us movement and range of motion.

There are three categories of joints classified by the amount of movement they allow: fibrous joints which allow no movement, cartilaginous joints which allow limited movement (as in spine and ribs), and synovial joints which are free-moving (the most common type of joint in the body).

All joint issues are a result of a breakdown or dysfunction of one or multiple parts of the joint system that prevent basic movement. This article will help you know your joint system, and especially the unique way in which the herb Solomon’s Seal can help with joint issues.

Types of Joints

There are various types of joints: fixed, hinge, pivot, ball and socket, gliding, saddle, and condyloid. The joint, remember, is a result of two bones meeting.

Hinge joint, as in knee or elbow

A fixed joint (i.e. fibrous joint) would be in the skull, pelvis and vetebrae — the skull plates don’t move together or against each other, but they are connected or fused.

A hinge joint (also called a ginglymus, and classified as a synovial joint), is a joint that allows only backward and forward range of motion. Hinge joints are so named because they resemble hinges, like one might find on a door. Some familiar examples of hinge joints are the elbow, which joins the humerous with the ulna, and the knee, which joins the femur with the tibia. Like a door, these joints can move back and forth, but cannot swivel or move in any other directions. Though ginglymi only move on one plane, they allow a very large range of movement on that plane, which is why they are found in the limbs.

A pivot joint, also known as a rotary joint, is a type of synovial joint in which a circular bone rotates, spins and twists upon the axis of another bone. There are only three pivot joints in the human body: one in the neck at the base of the skull (allowing back-and-forth and side-to-side movement), and one in the radius part of each elbow.

Ball and socket joint, as in hip and shoulder

A ball and socket joint (a type of synovial joint) allows the greatest range of motion. These joints are present where one bone ends with a spherical knob that lies in a circular depression in the other bone. This arrangement theoretically allows for 360 degrees of rotation — in other words, a full circle. Each shoulder has a ball and socket joint where the upper arm meets the shoulder blade The hips also have a ball and socket joint on either side, where the femur meets the pelvic bone.

A gliding joint allows bones to glide past each other. There are gliding joints in your ankles, wrists and spine.

A saddle joint allows for back and forth and side to side motion but limited rotation. There is a saddle joint in the thumb.

A condyloid joint allows movement but no rotation, as in the jaw and fingers.

Ligaments and Tendons

Ankle ligaments

Bones are connected to one another by strong flexible bands called ligaments. Very little red blood cells are in ligaments, therefore, when injury occurs (like a torn or stretched/loose ligament), recovery can be long with very careful convalescence recommended. This is because the restorative function of red blood cells cannot fully function in such deprived tissues.

Muscles, which provide the pulling force to move the joints, are attached to the bones by tough fibrous tendons (sinew). Tendons have more red blood cells, therefore, they can more easily recover from injury, such as a torn or stretched tendon.

Tendons in knee

Both the ligaments and tendons are housed in protective mucous sheaths that allow their use and contraction. The inflammation of these sheaths is common, for example, in hand and wrist injuries and pain.

The Role of Bursae, Cartilage and Synovium in the Joint System

Various tissues and fluids both within and outside of the joint serve as packing and reduce friction between all the moving parts — bones, ligaments and tendons.

Bursa in the Knee

A healthy joint is surrounded by a joint capsule, and between the muscles and the joint capsule lie protective fluid-filled pockets called bursae.

Within a joint capsule, the bones are protected from wear and tear by a pliable lining made up of cartilage, a smooth sheet-like coating that allows bones to move directly over each other.

The synovium, is more like a cushiony “inner-tube” that protects and lubricates the joint surfaces as well as brings nourishment to the surrounding tissues.

If something happens to just one aspect of the joint, it can lead you to experience pain.

Joint Pain and Inflammation

Our body has an internal “fire” of metabolism within the immune system that has the dual power to heal or cause pain. Inflammation can be likened to a burner on a gas stove. A local injury or infection alarms the body to turn the flame up and rally white blood cells, and later red blood cells, to the area of injury. A systemic or chronic inflammation, triggers the body to “keep the burner on simmer,” even when not suffering an injury, or long after the acute phase is over. This slow burn has been associated with a range of health conditions and degenerative diseases, including asthma, allergies, skin problems, insulin resistance, irritable bowel syndrome, heart disease, Alzheimer’s and arthritis.

Most forms of joint pain involve some kind of inflammation — either local or systemic. When injured, a chain of events in your immune system known as the inflammatory cascade is triggered. In a careful balance of give and take, this process starts with pro-inflammatory hormones calling out for white blood cells to clean up damaged tissue and clear out infection. This is what causes the redness, swelling and pain we often see with injury.

Next, anti-inflammatory compounds take over to heal the area once the threat is diminished. When this process, known as local or acute inflammation, waxes and wanes in response to injury it’s a sign of a healthy immune system. Yet when the symptoms of inflammation don’t disappear, it is saying that your immune system is unable to turn itself off when it should.

In terms of our joints, pain stemming from an injury or even short-term overuse can set off localized inflammation in the cartilage, tendons, or bursae. As the injury heals, players in your inflammatory cascade will perform their tasks and disappear. If the inflammation persists it can lead to a more chronic condition.

Future articles in this series will look at specific ways in which diet and food preferences play a key role in controlling or enhancing inflammation.

How Solomon’s Seal May Help the Joint System

People are often advised to take medications and over-the-counter pain relief aid (called NSAIDs, such as aspirin, etc.) to deal with joint pain and inflammation. Other strategies include rest, immobilization, support aids, heat or cold presses, liniments, salves and the like.

Numerous herbs can also provide relief, one being Solomon’s Seal. We have extensively discussed the usefulness of Solomon’s Seal in other articles on this blog, and our our website, www.solomonsseal.net. The plant’s diverse healing ability may serve to do the following, all of which involve some aspect of inflammation or discomfort.

Rebuild damaged cartilage & connecting tissue

Reduce inflammation and speeds healing of bruises, wounds and skin irritations

Hasten recovery from bone injuries (broken, stressed, osteoarthritis) and associated connective tissues, including arthritis

Produce synovial fluid to joints, bursae and synovium

Tighten or loosen (as needed) tendons, ligaments, joints & attachments associated with repetitive stress, injury & inflammation

Soothe gastrointestinal inflammation and injuries

Loosen mucous in lungs

Regulate blood pressure

Treat and relieve women’s issues

Solomon’s Seal can be used as a tincture, salve, liniment and tea. We have carefully formulated such products to create a very effective interventive approach, as discussed in the 3-Step Method below.

For detailed information about the effectiveness of liniments, see our two articles on this Blog and our website: www.solomonsseal.net.

STEP 3:

What robs us of our peace of mind? What steals away our joy? What diminishes our hope, will and faith? What jeopardizes our health? In short, what everyday habit limits our life?

WORRY.

We cannot seem to escape it. We worry about job and financial security. We worry about our health, and the high costs to treat disease and illness. We worry about a natural catastrophe that can wipe our homes and possessions away within minutes. We worry about getting older. We worry about crime and our safety. We worry about basic survival, maintaining a sense of dignity, and somehow getting our fair share. We even worry that our voice will not be heard, that no one is listening.

At its most basic, worry is simply a thought. Dr. Zacharty Bercovitz states, “Some patients I see are actually draining into their bodies the diseased thoughts of their minds.” In other words, worry can be characterized as a cycle of inefficient thought revolving about a pivot of fear. Such fear can keep us restless and filled with tension. “Worry, doubt, fear and despair,” said General Douglas MacArthur, “are the enemies that slowly bring us down to the ground and turn us to dust before we die.”

The Fog of Unfounded Worry

Most people worry well outside their means. This statement is not meant to belittle the reality of a health issue or injury, nor to insult our attempts to be healthy and to intervene on an injury or acute/chronic condition. It simply means that we give too many thoughts to worry.

Let’s put things into perspective.

According to the Bureau of Standards, a dense fog covering seven city blocks, to a depth of 100 feet, is composed of something less than one glass of water. Less than a glass of water! Now, this could be compared to our worries. If we could magically see into the future, and if we could see our problems in their true light, we might be surprised as to their true size and place in the overall scheme of our life. In short, if all the things we worried about were reduced to their true size, we could probably put them all into a drinking glass, too.

A study over 40 years ago is often cited by motivation speakers as a way to put worry into perspective. It was conducted by a Dr. Walter Calvert, and funded by the National Science Foundation. Thousands of people were interviewed about their perception of worry in their lives. The statistics are oft-quoted:

30% of our worries are about events in the past. That’s right, all the worry in the world cannot change the past.

40% of the things we worry about never happen. That’s right, they will never occur anyway because they are somewhere off into the nebulous future.

12% of our worries are unfounded health concerns. Over 95% of health care is actually self-care, yet we manage to preoccupy ourselves with unrealistic health issues, even to the extent that we don’t trust our own intuition or knowledge about what is right and not right in personally healing ourselves.

10% of our worries are over minor and trivial issues. Petty concerns drive us crazy, but are they so real that they steal from our precious optimism, faith and will?

Only 8% of our worries are real, legitimate issues.

That’s right, less than 10% of all our worries are worth concerning ourself with. Put another way, over 90% of our worries are pure fog with no substance at all!

When I say that you may be inclined to worry outside your means, it is to point out an elemental truth about worry. And over 40 years later, the above study still rings true in our chaotic society filled with endless uncertainties. Here is the truth about worry:

Don’t dwell on the past; it is over. Don’t agonize over the future. This alone can resolve over 80% of all our worries! The test is to live in the present and focus all of your energy, talent, commitment and compassion on the moment. If you can do this, then you have awakened to what I call Worrying Within Your Means.

Worry Within Your Means

The beloved cartoon character, Charlie Brown, gives us a glimpse at worrying within our means: I’ve developed a new philosophy: I only dread one day at a time. When you think about it, today is the tomorrow we worried about yesterday. It all seems so natural to think, think, think about the past and future.

Some crazy scientists speculated that we have over 60,000 thoughts per day — about one thought per second! They further postulated that 95% of those thoughts are the exact same thoughts we had yesterday, and the day before that and the day before that. And to make it all seem even more dismal, 80% of those habitual thoughts are negative ones disguised as worry, doubt, fear, judgment and the like.

In some respects, all this is why most people discover in meditation or stillness that they are faced with an incessant chatter of thoughts inside their head — what Buddhism calls “monkey mind.” It is as if our thoughts play around in our mind like a never-ending loop.

When it comes to your personal healing of a health condition or injury, where is your frame of mind? Are you stuck in a continual loop of worry and concern? Or do you feel positive and hopeful that your interventions are working, even if you may not fully see results within a time frame of your expectations? Are you impatient for the future recovery to occur?

Of course, financial issues are perhaps the biggest worry in treating health concerns and injuries. However, money alone cannot heal you. You must use another type of wealth — the wellth of your intelligence, intuition, faith, perseverance, and will. The wellth of the support of family and/or friends, and caring health professionals.

When you put your health concern or injury into perspective, you realize that your greatest power for healing is in the present moment, focusing your thoughts on healing. This is the only way you can rein those wild horses of your thoughts — the only way you can worry within your means.

How to Break the Habit of Worry

If worry robs us of peace and joy, and keeps us living limited lives, our health — mental, emotional and physical — will ultimately suffer. Here are seven useful ways to practice worrying within your means, and potentially break the habit of worry.

Ask yourself: What are the chances that what I am worrying about will ever happen?
You need to believe in the miracle of your body and its ability to heal and regenerate itself. You cannot have unrealistic expectations, nor push the future too quickly into the present. You cannot worry yourself well. Wellness is not a magic bullet you can consume. It is something to which you must bring your attention and focus, commitment and compassion. Excessive worry will work against you. Moderated concern will keep you awake and aware to those signs of healing.

Ask yourself: How much of the small stuff do I sweat about?
Don’t make things bigger than they are. Don’t spend valuable time on inconsequential things and thoughts. Let your healing unfold naturally, not forcefully. In healing work, the first three months are critical for observation. This is when the body’s regenerative mechanisms are stimulated. You can undercut such healing by constantly picking at the “scabs” of your injury or health condition with petty worry — the kind of thoughts that wonder if something is working or not, that wonder if a particular intervention is a waste of time and money.

Ask yourself: Can I accept the things I cannot change, change the things I can, and have the wisdom to know the difference? (known as the Serenity Prayer)
Your commitment to health and recovery of an injury asks for a healthy dose of acceptance and informed action. You must accept that recovery may not be 100%. However, you must commit to 100% effort, rallying your knowledge and will as leverage with any intervention, be that medication, exercise or proper convalescence.

Ask yourself: Do I focus on solutions or problems?
Most people spend 90% of their time on the problem and 10% on the solution. By problem, I mean spending great energy on treating symptoms, and not refined effort on getting to the root cause of a health condition or injury. Most health-care, unfortunately, treats symptomatic problems with ill-advised medications or procedures. Instead, devote 90% of your energy to analyzing your lifestyle, leisure-style, exercise-style, work-style, diet, stress, emotional and mental stability, sense of spirit, and relevant support systems like family and friends. These are often major actors in both your health and your wellness.

Ask yourself: Where do I live in — the past or future?
Don’t try to predict what MIGHT or CAN happen in the future. Don’t dwell on, or berate yourself about the past. Concentrate on what you want to happen NOW. Learn from the past, plan for the future, but live in the present. Only in the present is your true potential for successful healing, at the level your body is meant to heal.

Ask yourself: Do I try to ignore my problems to make them go away?
Problems don’t go away or get better because you ignore them. You must solve your problems as they arise. How? Look for the best possible solution, using knowledge and intuition, and then take positive action. Look at your overall life. You may discover that a change is necessary — you may need to limit certain assertive forms of activity, or alter certain foods and food cravings, or change your attitude about things, and so on. In any case, confront your life in the present moment, as things arise. Empower yourself with knowledge and will.

Ask yourself: Do I live my life based on What if?
We all know the mentally excruciating dilemma of What if. The problem is that you could spend your entire precious life worrying about nothing! The antidote is simple: Stay active and focused. Engage in activities that inspire and motivate you, that invest in your overall wellness and attitude about life. Stay focused on possibilities, not problems; opportunities, not barriers. For some people, a spiritual belief system is an important ally in healing. For others, a determined will and faith in oneself is key. The key is to work for healing in the present moment, not in the What if of yesterday or the future.

So, what would you rather have: peace of mind, or an ongoing looting of your soul by worry? Mark Twain reminds us how worry can dog us lifelong: “I am an old man and have known many troubles, but most of them never happened.”

For many people a day of worry is more exhausting than a day of work. Thankfully, we have a night to rest our aches and pains and woes. And for those who believe in a God, this is welcome grace from worry, as Mary Crowley points out:

Every evening I turn my worries over to God. He’s going to be up all night anyway.

The medicinal use of the root of the herb Solomon’s Seal (polygonatum biflorum or multiflorum) dates back over 3,500 years ago to the era of King Solomon. He was so impressed by the plant’s diverse healing qualities that he proclaimed it a gift from God, and thus named it after himself. Its more “modern day” acknowledgement was by Dioscorides and Pliny in the 1st Century, A.D. Asian medicine considers it one of the ten top healing plants. Ancient Europeans and North American Indians considered it a medicinal “workhorse” of wide value. Today, there is increasing interest in the therapeutic values of the plant.

Solomon's Seal (polygonatum biflorum)

Just a partial list of its uses demonstrates Solomon’s Seal’s wide healing potential:

Rebuilds damaged cartilage & connecting tissue

Reduces inflammation and speeds healing of bruises, wounds and skin irritations

Hastens recovery from bone injuries (broken, stressed, osteoarthritis) and associated connective tissues, including arthritis

Produces synovial fluid to reduce grinding in joints

Tightens or loosens (as needed) tendons, ligaments, joints & attachments associated with repetitive stress, injury & inflammation

Soothes gastrointestinal inflammation and injuries

Loosens mucous in lungs

Regulates blood pressure

Treats and relieves women’s issues

The question remains, however, what makes Solomon’s Seal work so well? What are its constituents that, when processed into a tincture, salve, tea or liniment, or when combined with those of another herb, empower its healing qualities?

The Main Constituents of Solomon’s Seal

Perhaps the best known, and more commonly understood, components of Solomon’s Seal are gum, sugar, starch, pectin, and Vit. A. Responsible for Solomon’s Seal’s many health activities, however, is a unique phytocomposition, as if coming out of a laboratory:

steroidal saponins (Beneficial health effects include control of blood cholesterol levels, bone health, cancer, and building up of the immune system)

glycosides (Cardiac glycosides are an important class of naturally occurring drugs, available in plants, whose actions include both beneficial and toxic effects on the heart. Plants containing cardiac steroids have been used as poisons and heart drugs at least since 1500 B.C. Throughout history these plants or their extracts have been variously used as arrow poisons, emetics, diuretics, and heart tonics. Cardiac steroids are widely used in the modern treatment of congestive heart failure and for treatment of atrial fibrillation and flutter. Although their toxicity remains a serious problem if taken in large or sustained quantities, in very small doses, as used in tinctures and homeopathy, they are entirely safe)

polysaccharides (The form in which most natural carbohydrates occur. It accounts for the mucilagenous, soothing qualities of a root herb like Solomon’s Seal)

alkaloids (A naturally occurring group of chemical compounds. Most of the known functions of alkaloids are related to protection from parasitic bacteria and fungi, as a neurotransmitter, and as a regulator for cell growth and metabolism)

anthraquinones (Anthraquinones are more likely to be present in plants as glycosides owing to the variety of sugar contents and this enhances the range of the compound. Usually anthraquinones are found in the form of aglycone. They are often compounded into a laxative with benefits for digestion and elimination)

flavonoids (Flavonoids, also referred to as bioflavonoids, are polyphenol antioxidants found naturally in plants. Recent research indicates that flavonoids can be nutritionally helpful by triggering enzymes that reduce the risk of certain cancers, heart disease, and age-related degenerative diseases.

asparagine (Asparagine is an essential component of those proteins that are concerned with neuronal development and signaling transmission across nerve endings. Asparagine is essential to all living cells for the production of many proteins)

allantoin (An anti-inflammatory. Allantoin is a chemical compound naturally produced by many organisms, including animals, plants, and bacteria. It is a frequent ingredient in lotions and skin creams, as well as in oral hygiene products, cosmetics, and other toiletries. Allantoin is also used in medications for dermatological conditions. It is effective at very low concentrations, usually from 0.1% to 2%.)

convallarin (Broadly used in medicine as a heart regulator; it is a white, crystalline glucoside, of an irritating taste, extracted from the convallaria or Lily-of-the-Valley plant, a relative of Solomon’s Seal).

Solomon's Seal root

From looking at these phytochemical components of the root of Solomon’s Seal, we can begin to understand the plant’s broad therapeutic application. Additionally, it helps explain why it has been used so broadly as a healing agent for thousands of years among many cultures.

We can now look at how these components play out in the various uses of Solomon’s Seal, be it as a tincture, salve, tea or liniment. That is, the general healing properties of Solomon’s Seal.

General Healing Properties of Solomon’s Seal

Mild Sedative

Best use: Tincture, Tea. Soothes and reduces nervousness, distress, excitement, or irritation. It can also reduce pain or discomfort (for example, muscle and connective tissue injuries, bursitis, bruises, arthritis, menstrual cramps, etc.) and has a strengthening, tonic effect.

Vulnerary

Best use: Salve (poultice), Liniment, Tincture. For external applications, heals wounds (open), cuts, burns, bruises. Treats skin conditions such as rashes. For issues related to tissues, it treats sprains, strains, inflamed tendons, ligaments, muscles, and joints.

Demulcent

Best use: Tea, Salve. As a mucilaginous herb, it is soothing, cooling, and moistening when applied to irritated, inflamed, or abraded tissue, especially mucus membranes, throat, lungs, and skin. Specific to the throat, Solomon’s Seal coats it for relief of dry coughs.

Tonic

Best use: Tincture, Tea. Restores normal functions by stimulating, invigorating, strengthening, and toning the kidneys, heart, and sexual organs, and soothing the digestive system. Also very beneficial for the skin.

Anti-rheumatic

Best use: Tincture, Tea, Liniment. Reduces rheumatic pain, arthritic pain, inflammation, and infection in the joints. Osteoarthritis and connective tissue problems which are not due to excess immune response, but rather to stiffness, coldness, injury, overuse, underuse, excess weight bearing, lack of proper feeding and waste removal in the connective tissue, etc., respond without any problem of dosage amount. Solomon’s seal will aggravate rheumatoid arthritis unless used in small doses, like most herbalists prescribe in tinctures.

Adaptogenic

Best use: Tincture, Tea. Helps the body adapt to internal (injuries to bones, connective tissues, joints, etc.) and environmental stresses by strengthening the immune system. By feeding, nourishing, and cleansing autoimmune irritated joints, bursae, and damaged tissues, Solomon’s Seal, in small doses, seems to help the excessive immune reaction to normalize. Solomon’s Seal works synergistically and is highly effective when combined with other specific herbs such as agrimony, vervain, and many more.

Diuretic & Mild Laxative

Best use: Tea. Increases the secretion, flow, and expulsion of urine. It promotes the formation of urine by the kidney and may aid in flushing the body of toxins and excess water, and breaking down fat.

Anti-inflammatory

Best use: Tincture, Tea, Salve, Liniment. The allantoin in Solomon’s Seal helps to reduce or counteract feverish inflammations and infections associated with all types of injuries to the muscular-skeletal systems, including all forms of arthritis. It may act to produce cortisone in the body that stimulates the production and regulation of necessary synovial fluid in bursae and joints.

Expectorant

Best use: Tea, Tincture. Promotes the discharge of mucus and phlegm from the lungs and throat by means of spitting or coughing. Reduces irritation in such organs. Among its many effects (and uses in Chinese medicine) as a traditional yin tonic for the body’s mucous membranes, Solomon’s Seal moistens and provides energy (chi or qi) to the lungs, improving breathing and oxygenation to the blood. Better lung function leads to more abundant metabolic energy. Deficient lung qi is characterized by weakness, fatigue, shortness of breath and heart palpitations. Therefore, Solomon’s Seal is helpful for dry cough, bronchitis, and even TB. Its immune stimulating and antibiotic effects also assist in overcoming respiratory infections.

Cardiovascular Regulation

Best use: Tincture, Tea. Solomon’s Seal is known to have a mild regulating effect on the heart muscle because it contains small, safe amounts of the substance convallarin, a cardio glycoside. Alhough this is a potent chemical constituent, it seems to be in insufficient quantity to be of concern or use. The National Institute of Health is currently researching Solomon’s Seal’s effectiveness in regulating blood pressure. If you are pregnant, have low blood pressure, or are on heart medication, it is not recommended that you use Solomon’s Seal without consulting your doctor.

Precautions

Solomon’s Seal is safe for most adults when taken for short time periods. It may cause some side effects such as diarrhea, stomach complaints, and nausea when taken for long time periods or in large doses. The doses suggested for taking the herb as a tincture or tea have very minimal risk. However, it is sensible to create a dosage regimen that does not create a dependency, such as 6 days of ingestion to 1 day off, or 10-14 days ingestion and 2-3 days off.

Pregnancy and breast-feeding: Not enough is known about the use of Solomon’s Seal during pregnancy and breast-feeding. However, as with taking any drug or medication, consultation with a medical practitioner may be appropriate.

Diabetes: Solomon’s Seal might decrease blood sugar levels. There is potential that it might interfere with blood sugar control. If you use Solomon’s seal and take diabetes medications, monitor your blood sugar closely. Again, medical consultation may be appropriate.

Surgery: Solomon’s Seal might lower blood sugar levels. It might interfere with blood sugar control during and after surgery.

Monitor your blood sugar closely. The dose of your medication might need to be changed.

Insulin may interact with SOLOMON’S SEAL. Solomon’s seal might decrease blood sugar. Insulin is also used to decrease blood sugar.
Tincture or Tea?

Solomon’s Seal, taken as a tea, soothes irritation in the digestive tract, lungs, throat, vagina, and uterus. On the other hand, the tincture is generally superior to the tea for treating sports and repetitive use injuries, and injuries involving tendons, ligaments, muscles, joints, attachments, cartilage, and bones. In fact, the tincture works to strengthen the entire muscular-skeletal system. However, Solomon’s Seal tincture is generally less effective than the tea in preserving the soothing demulcent quality discussed above. Use either the tea or tincture to speed recovery after surgery or the setting of a bone, to rebuild strength and well-being after a fever or the flu, or to aid in keeping a chiropractic adjustment in place.

Although Solomon’s Seal has many excellent healing properties, we are not trying to offer you a magic bullet. It works perfectly for some and less well or not at all for others. Time and possibly multiple approaches may be required to heal chronic conditions that have been developing over a number of years. Acute conditions, on the other hand, (such as pneumonia, broken bones, or any serious injury) often require immediate medical intervention. After the initial intervention, however, Solomon’s Seal can be a support in the healing process, such as recovering from surgery or maintaining a chiropractic adjustment.

Each person is different and will have their own unique response to Solomon’s Seal. You may experience some level of immediate relief or it may take time to notice any beneficial effects. Please be patient and keep track of your daily dosage, changing symptoms, and any improvements, even if gradual. When unpleasant symptoms subside, it’s easy to forget that we ever had them. Writing things down can make the healing process a good learning experience.
