Solomon’s Seal: Increased Healing Benefits with 7 Key Herbs

Note: Much of the content of this article was carefully researched and formulated by the creator of the line of Cortesia Solomon’s Seal tinctures, Tricia Clark-McDowell

We’ve written extensively about the effectiveness of Solomon’s Seal in connection with damaged tendons, ligaments, muscles, bones, inflammation, and more. It is possible, however, to hone in on very specific physical conditions with advanced Solomons’s Seal formulas that work synergistically to foster even deeper healing.

Consequently, the powerful healing properties are enhanced when Solomon’s Seal is carefully combined with one or more seven key herbs to address specific issues, such as arthritis, bone repair and bone building, cartilage and tissue damage, deep pain and tension, and women’s issues related to menopause and PMS.

This article guides you specifically about how we have combined Solomon’s Seal with one or more of the following powerful seven herbs to create specific formulas:

  • Agrimony
  • Blue Vervain
  • Boneset
  • Gravel Root
  • Horsetail
  • Mullein
  • Pleurisy Root

First, let’s review the numerous healing benefits and suggested uses for regular Solomon’s Seal itself:

Cortesia Solomon’s Seal Tincture

ss tinctureRebuilds damaged cartilage & connective tissue  •  As needed, lubricates, tightens, or loosens tendons, ligaments, attachments & joints damaged by repetitive stress, injury & inflammation  •  Hastens recovery from arthritis, bone injuries (broken, stressed, osteoarthritis) & connective tissue damage  •  Soothes & repairs gastrointestinal inflammation/injuries  •  loosens mucous in lungs  •  lowers blood pressure  •  calcifies & strengthens bones  •  aids in female discomfort (cramps, bleeding, PMS, etc.)  •  and more!

Initial Use:     5-7 drops, 3x daily, placed under the tongue. You may find improvement in as little as 1-7 days; if healing is possible, look for it within 2-4 weeks. Be regular with your initial use! We suggest that you commit to taking the tincture for up to 3 months, as this is the critical window of time for most body healing to be observed, no matter what medication or intervention is used. You can experiment with dosage amounts up to 10-15 drops each administration. The nature of Solomon’s Seal is very benign, so it is difficult to overdose. However, larger doses do not mean faster healing, and is not recommended.

Maintenance Use:  We suggest initially using a full bottle. After noticeable improvement, you may reduce dosage to a few drops daily, or discontinue.

Emergency Use:  The quick-acting results of Solomon’s Seal suggest having a bottle on hand in your medicine cabinet or as part of an emergency kit when traveling or engaging in recreational activities. Use the Initial Use dosage.

ARTHRITIS & JOINT REPAIR

INGREDIENTS:     Solomon’s Seal Root (Polygonatum biflorum), Gravel Root (Eupatorium purpureum), Pleurisy Root (Asclepias tuberosa) – all organically grown or respectfully wildcrafted

Dosage: 10-15 drops, 3x daily for at least 3-4 weeks. Depending on the severity of your symptoms, may be taken for longer periods at the lower dose.

Benefits: Useful for symptoms of osteoarthritis, lubrication and repair of inflamed or painful joints (such as knees, ankles, shoulders, neck, etc.), repair of damaged tendons, ligaments, & connective tissue, dissolving of deposits in joints. Excellent for old injuries (sprains, whiplash, etc.), bursitis, weak nails and brittle hair. Has been reported to hasten post-surgery recovery, or even to prevent the need for surgery.

Gravel Root is specifically indicated for arthritis. It is known for its ability to bring minerals into and out of solution, hence its use as a remedy to dissolve and remove deposits in joints. It is also useful for weak hair and nails, to keep solids and liquids in balance in the body (kidney functioning), and as a tonic for the uterus.
Pleurisy Root is indicated in cases of acute inflammation, arthritis, bursitis, lack of lubrication, or clicking in the joints.
Solomon’s Seal works to harmonize, feed, lubricate, and tighten or loosen (as needed) tendons, ligaments, attachments, and joints. It is a valuable connective tissue anti-inflammatory, and is known to help moderate the symptoms of osteoarthritis.

BONE BUILDING & REPAIR

INGREDIENTS:     Solomon’s Seal Root (Polygonatum biflorum), Boneset (Eupatorium perfoliatum), Mullein Leaf (Verbascum thapsus) – all organically grown or respectfully wildcrafted

Dosage: 10-15 drops, 3x daily, for 3-4 weeks or longer, as needed

Benefits: This formula is helpful for those who are dealing with broken bones, crushed bones, stress or compression fractures, or any break that is not healing well or cannot be set (such as broken ribs or toes).

Boneset helps bones to heal strongly and well. Compression fractures of disks have sometimes been healed through its use. It also aids in bone recalcification, which is important in conditons such as osteoporosis.
Mullein
, among many other uses, helps set bones in the right place (such as broken ribs and broken fingers or toes), and can help in straightening the spine. It is also useful for osteoporosis because of its promotion of bone recalcification. It will help strengthen the entire muscular-skeletal system.

Benefits: Rebuilds damaged cartilage, often indicated by misaligned joints restricted in their movement. Adjusts connective tissue tension on joints. Helps heal tissues and joints injured by torn ligaments and deteriorated cartilage. Strengthens tissue, bones, mucous membranes, arteries, skin and weak hair and nails. Helps heals conditions associated with bursitis. Useful for early stages of arthritis.

Horsetail’s high silica content helps to rebuild damaged cartilage and structures. It strengthens connective tissue, bones, cartilage, mucous membranes, arteries, skin, and other tissue.
Solomon’s Seal produces what is called a “plastic response”, wherein diseased or injured tissues return to near or original quality. It is a valuable connective tissue anti-inflammatory. It is known to regenerate cartilage through adjusting the connective tissue tensions on joints. Finally, it stimulates or adjusts necessary synovial fluid in bursae and joints.

Promotes release of physical, nervous, and emotional tension, an important factor in both menopause and PMS. Has a cooling and calming effect on hot flashes. Supports the entire reproductive system. Can also have a favorable influence through reducing high blood pressure. This formula can also be useful for a variety of women’s complaints, including urinary tract infections, bladder irritation, incontinence, vaginitis, pelvic weakness, prolapse, and uterine or ovarian congestion.

Agrimony is well known for its use in pain and tension relief, cramps, regulation of ovulation, normalization of menstrual bleeding, and the menstrual cycle in general. It too is useful for a number of other female complaints. It’s strong calming and grounding influence helps lay the groundwork for deeper healing and well being to take root.
Blue Vervain
according to master herbalist Matthew Wood, “is an important remedy in menstrual and menopausal problems.” It moderates bleeding or irregular bleeding, hot flashes and headaches.

NOTE: This salve can be highly effective when used in combination with regular Solomon’s Seal tincture or any of the six formulas.

Arnica is highly effective for bruises and sprains, as it promotes healing and causes a reabsorption of internal bleeding. Arnica stimulates blood circulation and is also excellent for injuries to joints and muscles, including back strains.
Calendula
is very soothing for inflammation, dry skin, burns and sunburn.
Comfrey
is cooling and lubricating to sprains, strains, inflamed or arthritic joints, and other injuries to joints and muscles. The allantoin in comfrey is absorbed through the skin and speeds healing. Comfrey also encourages cell re-growth in connective tissues and broken bones and breaks down red blood cells in bruising.
Horsetail
is an anti-inflammatory and antiseptic, good for bones, muscles, and joints. Can help soothe and gradually eliminate varicose veins (though best in this case if used with Solomon’s Seal Tincture – Formula #3: Cartilage & Tissue Repair). Can help ease the pain of rheumatism, arthritis, etc.
Mullein
is an external application to soothe nerve pain and to promote setting and healing of broken bones, fractures, sprains, and strains. Good for pain relief in major burns.

30 thoughts on “Solomon’s Seal: Increased Healing Benefits with 7 Key Herbs

  1. Hi – I am 27 weeks pregnant (4th pregnancy) and have been experiencing a lot of strong Braxton Hicks contractions lately. I had a dream that Solomon’s Seal would help, and after reading the above uses for the herb – ie the way it aids in ligament/tendon tension control, and mentrual cramps, think I may be right!

I just wanted to check whether you had any more specific thoughts.

    Thanks for you time

    Josie

    • Josie:
Historically, Solomon’s Seal has been used for a wide variety of women’s issues or concerns. That you dreamed about Solomon’s Seal perhaps taps into that archetypal power of the herb related to womens’ interests over many centuries.

Straight Solomon’s Seal may provide relief for your condition. We also combined it with Agrimony because the resulting synergism between these herbs gives added pain and tension relief. In your situtation, you should engage in strategies for tension release, i.e. relaxation.

Here are some additional strategies, besides herbal intervention:

      1. Walking is very relaxing, gentle, and toning for the body. It will relax your joints and muscles.
      2. Take a warm baths and showers to help your body relax.
      3. Increase your water intake, since these contractions can sometimes be brought on by dehydration.
      4. Try relaxation exercises or slow, deep breathing, perhaps easy yoga positions, and definitely meditation or mind-calming exercises. This won’t stop the Braxton Hicks contractions, but it may help you cope with the discomfort.
      5. Write in your journal. Write poetry and beautiful thoughts – things that beautify your pregnancy and make you feel good mentally.
      6. Read inspirational literature – things that inspire you and make you feel good about life.
      7. Create a sanctuary space to call your own. It could be a special room, a corner of a room, even a special chair; it could be a spot in the yard or garden. Infuse this place with your spirit and that of your child. This is where you can be more yourself than any other place, just for a while. A place where you can sit and just be – a witness to nature, your thoughts or things around you; where you can read and write and meditate and contemplate. A place where you can relax and be one with your body.
      8. Listen to gentle, inspiring music.
      9. Express the need for loving support from your partner, or a dear friend, where you can be held or listened to or gently converse with.

The main point I make is that you should strive to create your life around relaxation. You are blessed to be part of a beautiful act of creation. To try to mask any discomfort or try to make it all go away is counter to the “dance of creation.” The message of your dream is to tap into those deep harmonic relationships women have to nature, creation and spirit. If Solomon’s Seal can help in some way, great. Ultimately, however, your relief is by your own means of being mindful of your body-mind-spirit throughout your entire pregnancy.

I wish you many health blessings,
      Forrest

      • Forrest – what a lovely, thoughtful reply. Thank you so very much.

Despite juggling two lively boys and the myriad projects of my life, a husband who is at university, the general running of the household, and a ‘must get as much done as possible before the baby comes’ attitude of late, I have now been trying to slow down, listen to my body and take things easier. And actually -it all feels much nicer! Of course!

And so, I am saying ‘no’ more; doing less and enjoying this growing life within me that much more.

Thank you again for your kind support

        Josie

  2. Greetings Dr. Forest,

Is Solomon seal good for hair loss? and if so can it be applied to the scalp or is it best to drink as a tea?

    • I would not make any claim that Solomon’s Seal is effective for hair loss, taken in any form. Perhaps there are some folk loric or anecdotal claims, but I am not familiar with any. I would not rule out, however, the peculiar and unique effects on each individual when taking herbs. Personal body chemistry and health may help a natural plant-based intervention have a synergistic effect with various systems of the body. This because our body is a soupy mix of natural occurring chemicals, enzymes, etc., i.e. “drugs,” that always have the potential of interacting with each other, given the proper conditions or stimulation. So, some people experience responses different than others; therefore, it could be possible that a plant like Solomon’s Seal, what with it diverse therapeutic properties, could have an effect on hair, specific to an individual. In that case, it would be a nonharmful experiment to message the scalp with Solomon’s Seal!

  3. Dear Forrest,
Some years ago I injured my shoulder rock climbing. My shoulder has never recovered and I still use a Devils Claw gel twice a day to calm the inflammation – this works really well but without the gel the pain comes back. I had an MRI scan and the doctor said there might be tendon damage (connecting my bicep muscle to my shoulder). Maybe its frayed, torn, inflamed, but the doctor said that surgery wouldn’t be worth the risk as it may make it worse – which sounds sensible. What I would like to know is do you think that soloman seal (maybe in combination with something else) would help repair and heal my shoulder? I definitely won’t be climbing again but I would love to be able to reduce the pain and maybe build up some strength in that arm again….one day!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

    Yours sincerely Ben Dunne

    • Hello Ben:

Shoulder injuries are notoriously slow for repair and recovery. I had a severe shoulder injury for decades that prevented adequate sleep at night because of discomfort. It also clicked and rode high.

I took straight Solomon’s Seal tincture that we had created, and within 2 days all symptoms were gone, and I slept a full night sleep! Others have had similar experiences. Most certainly, these may be extreme positive examples of results, but my healing of chronic injuries using SS has been thorough and long-lasting. In contrast, a chronic ankle injury took about 5-7 months to “heal” using SS, after years of discomfort.

For your shoulder injury, Solomon’s Seal can aid in reducing inflammation (critical strategy), adjusting the tensions of connective tissues, and regenerating important fluids and moisture in the tissues and joints and bursae. Long-term injuries will require longer and regular intervention, but relief is possible to some degree.

We have suggested in our blog articles and on our website, a 1-2-3 Method for intervention. This would be especially effective for your shoulder injury. The method uses our liniment, salve and tincture. It is important to move the herbal therapeutic constituents into the dermal and deeper tissue, and the liniment and salve do this. Rubbing in the liniment creates the necessary heat to transport. Then, rub in the salve. In both instances, rub for several minutes to create skin heat. I call this process “making love to your shoulder (or hand, foot, etc)”. The third strategy is to take the tincture several times daily.

Accordingly, diet adjustment is necessary with such important healing. This includes reducing processed sugars, salt, soft drinks, alcohol, and gluten foods. These foods feed inflammation; they also leach important building minerals out of tissues and bones and joints.

Always, with any healing work, increase water intake. This is especially invaluable with primary therapeutic herbs like Solomon’s Seal that are “moisturizing” agents for the body’s tissues and organs and joints. For them to work the best, increased water is important for flushing out toxins, moisturizing, and joint and connective tissue fluidity and elasticity.

In summary, straight Solomon’s Seal tincture would be a good start to your healing strategy. I also encourage the use of an external topical agent, for both short-term relief and long-term healing, such as our Acute & Chronic Injury Salve and our Cortesia Quick Relief Liniment.

Our body is a marvelous instrument that can heal itself with our loving care and knowledge. We must also accept the inevitability of injuries, not all of which can be fully restored to optimal functionality, but the discomfort reduced, nevertheless.

I wish you the best in your healing journey,
      Forrest

      • Hello Forrest,

Thanks for such a considered reply. I was interesting to hear that your sore shoulder benefited from the tincture. I hope that my shoulder has a similar response, but rest assured, my expectations are realistic, especially as i have felt the disappointment of other treatments. Can I buy Soloman Seal in the UK or is it only available in the US – can you send it over?

Looking forward to hearing from you – Ben

  4. Hi Forrest,

I have several tendon and ligament foot injuries. I got injured last year and now my midfoot ligaments, arch tendon insertions, peroneal tendons have all become chronic. Other than that I am a healthy 56 year old male. I am looking at prolotherapy and Platelet Rich Plasma injections to regenerate these lossned and weak ligaments. But I just saw your product. I see that you also had a bad ankle and it took some time to resolve. Did you notice it slowly getting better over time with solomon’s tincture?

    CW

    • Dear CW:

Your inquiry about Solomon’s Seals’ usefulness with conditions such as yours, is appreciated.

Tendons and Ligaments heal at extremely slow rates because these connective tissues are avascular (lack of blood supply). Whereas other connective tissues such as bone heal at a MUCH higher rate because of high vascularity. So, you have to accept that healing (or “wellness”) may take a long time in an area of the body (the feet)that is naturally so active so as to support the body and provide mobility.

That being said, we have received numerous replies from people over the past 5 years, reporting noticeable and/or significant healing from connective tissue issues, especially vulnerable areas like the ankles, knees, elbows, shoulders, lower back, hands. We have several medical professionals carefully monitoring patient healing with SS, especially with connective tissues (one doctor of 80 years of age, in particular, healed a personal chronic 60 year old knee injury received from athletics in just a few days; that encouraged him to research similar effects with selected patients).

In short, Solomon’s Seal is a worthy consideration in your healing regimen. People have considered therapies and injections and surgeries, but held off upon taking SS and experiencing positive results. This is no miracle cure promise, for each person is unique. If you are fit, your diet moderate, you exercise and rest, and you have good water intake, you may likely experience effects soon (within days, and definitely 1-2 weeks).

Your particular type of tendon and ligament foot injuries is exactly the reason we began formulating our Solomon’s Seal tinctures, liniment, and salves. Tricia, my partner and the master herbalist who creates the tinctures, totally healed your foot issues in two weeks, to the amazement of doctors who insisted on a $30,000 operation. I had stretched connective tissues in my ankle from a home repair injury, and it took several months to fully recover.

At the time, we only used straight Solomon’s Seal tincture. You could use this. Or, consider our Formula #3: Cartilage & Tissue Repair, because of the invaluable addition of Horsetail to the synergism of SS. We always recommend a 1-2-3 Method, meaning firmly rubbing in our SS Liniment, followed by the healing salve, and take the tincture as desired throughout the day. The salve and liniment or specially formulated for deep penetration from the dermal layers to deep tissue; the tincture works at the inner level, directly with tissues and blood cells and moisture.

I wish you the very best of healing.

  5. I fell on my knee about 5 mo. ago,it`s healing but I want to know if i can use solomans seal, gravel root, pleurisy root, boneset, agrimony, blue vervain, along with the mullein, comfrey, and horsetail tea I`m already taking. Can i make a tea out of these other herbs?

    • You can make a tea out of any herb, but you must have the raw plant ingredient for best therapeutic results. You can, however, place your tincture drops in any liquid, like a light tea, and drink. Used as a tea, Solomon’s Seal alone is highly therapeutic (both as a hot and cold tea) for any bronchial issues, as a detox and cleanser for the liver and kidneys, and for reducing all-round inflammation.

The best approach with your knee issue is to use the tincture with the salve and/or liniment. Remember, it will take longer for knee, ankle, shoulder injuries to heal because of the extent of connective tissues and joints that have fewer red blood cells necessary for efficient healing. If you fell on your knee, then you may have fractured the cap, and certainly affected the bursae in that area.

I hope your healing is optimal for you.

  6. Hi Forrest,

I have been suffering with tennis elbow for about 2 years. I have been able to control the symptons with strerching, ice packs, and by wearing an elbow support. However due to recent work activities I am experiencing pain at the inner and outer side of the elbow along with a burning sensation running along my forearm. On top of that I also have a ganglion on the dorsal side of my right wrist that has not gone away for about 2 years as well.

I have purchased formula # 6 about month ago. The next day I notice my ganglion shrink considerably. My question to you is this: Is formula # 6 the best formula to use, what other products can I use to aid in healing and how long can an old injury take to recover.

On an added note, due to my work schedule I have not been able for the last week and a half to continue my regime and I have noticed my ganglion to grow back in size. This is a strong indicator that I have to go back on SS.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.

    Regards,

    Agim

    • I would continue with Formula #6. This formula has higher dosages because you are getting the full equivalent dose of Solomon’s Seal alongside the other synergistic herbs (that work very well together).

The primary issue you are facing is inflammation. The sheath near your wrist through which the nerves pass from the hands all the way up to the neck is inflammed. I believe this is referring pain up your arm, elbow, and possibly higher. Your symptoms as described are classic for Tennis Elbow.

Solomon’s Seal (and associated herbs in our formulas) work quickly to moderate inflammation. You are doing the proper care (icing, stretching, wearing a support) and need patience to observe changes. For more chronic or long-term injuries, it will take longer to heal, but this first month of SS usage will give, as it already has, a good indication of effectiveness.

Tips: Be regular. Every 7th day, don’t take any medication (to flush out the body systems and prevent it from developing a dependency upon the herbs). Then begin again. Many people experience an escalated improvement soon after commencing again.

As well, consider dietary changes to reduce inflammation. Unfortunately, present diets heavily aggravate inflammation and interrupt healing. During this focused healing period, reduce intake of these foods: processed sugars, gluten-based items, alcohol, salts, sodas, dairy, caffeine. Why? They specifically leach essential minerals and nutrients right out of tissues, joints, and bones, resulting in increased inflammation and blocking the optimal use and absorption of water, synovial fluid between bones and bursae, and the herbs.

Increase water intake. These herbs NEED plenty of moisture to integrate into tissues and nerve trunks. Plain water.
Of course, moderate your activity. Usually Tennis Elbow can clear up in weeks to a few months, based on severity, but the discomfort is disturbing to activity and relaxation.

Finally, you might consider additionally using our deep healing salve and/or liniment for this type of condition — they are perfect for used with the internally taken tincture.

I hope this helps, and I wish you the best of healing.

  7. Hello Forrest, I am e-mailing for my sister who has been pretty much on crutches for the past month when her leg just gave out from under her. She is only 49 and she just had surgery on her right knee to repair torn cartilage—they had to remove 10% of the cartilage as it was so frayed. They said the knee cap looked good but cartilage in bad shape. The tears are not related to any kind of injury or fall.. They also mended another tear that was starting to develop. I want her to get on an herbal program to speed her healing but I didn’t know if she should be on Formula 3 or 6 and if you would also recommend her taking it along with the salve. She also has a history of migraine headaches. . .her naturopath doctor put her on magnesium which seemed to help but I think she needs to take an herbal infusion to help with calcium supplementation. My mother, sister, and myself have mitral valve prolapse —-would these symptoms all be related to problems with connective tissue? I also have a history of scoliosis. Thank you!

    • I would recommend using Formula #6: All-in-One. You will get the full dose of Solomon’s Seal, plus the special synergy of the other herbs, including horsetail (that is in Formula #3). Using with the salve is good.

Recovery from knee injuries is slow. But herbal interventions can help restore moisture, reduce inflammation, and stimulate restoration. My first thought is about your sister’s weight and fitness and diet. Even just a few extra pounds adds dozens of pounds of weight and force to the knee and ankles. Therefore, recovery can be enhanced with weight moderation. Additionally, engage in only weight-bearing activities (walking is best) — women of mid-age need to do this to counter calcium and bone loss, and use a small knee support (a small donut-shaped support that easily mounts just below the kneecap) if desired.

Diet is key also. These foods are killers for bones, joints, cartilage, etc.: all processed sugar, soda, caffeine, alcohol, gluten, etc. — they literally leach minerals, etc. right out of the bones and body systems. Significantly increase water levels to assist the herbs.

The addition of Magnesium to a diet is important. Our body cannot generate the amount of Magnesium needed daily, and yet it is needed for key body systems and regulation. The proper amount to take is indicated by the consistency of your stool (which should be soft but not runny). Make certain you take Magnesium + citrate (NOW brand is readily available; about $10 for a 3 month supply of powder). The citric acid is necessary to unlock the Magnesium for body use. Best to drink it in a cup of warm tap water to activate it. The Magnesium and the herbs in our tinctures should help significantly with headaches.

Finally, be careful about taking calcium supplements. Recent important research shows that women especially are at higher risk for heart attack taking more than 840 mg a day. Most people (women, too) are ingesting over 1400 mg and much higher daily. Calcium supplements are actually not necessary if you have a proper balanced diet.

You ask if numerous symptoms are related to connective tissues. The answer is: most often symptoms are signs of inflammation, or stress on the particular system as a result of an injury or overuse. Because of the critical role of connective tissues, they need plenty of moisture and moderate exercise to stay fit. As we age, our connective tissues become drier, more brittle and less flexible — all making us more prone to injury. Because fewer red blood cells are in these connective tissues (to allow for repair), it takes much longer to heal. This is why increasing water intake is invaluable — it keeps the systems pliable and moist at the same time easily transporting the chemical constituents of herbs throughout the body.

I wish your sister the very best of healing.

  8. Hello Forest, I’ve been recently diagnosed with a hereditary connective tissue disorder called Ehlers Danlos Syndrome. My body has a defect in how it produces collagen, hence a lot muscular skeleton and nerve pain due to joint hypermobility. This condition effect connective tissue in ligaments, tendons, bones, muscles, vessels. When I read about Solomon’s Seal it sounded like a miracle since nothing can tighten the loose ligaments. Do you think that All in One formula can be beneficial? I also have osteoporosis. Thank you for your advise.

    • The herbs in Formula #6: All-in-One provide a synergistic effect (additive effect by working together) that should be of benefit to you and some of your conditions. Our numerous years of experience with the specific herbs we use, has allowed us to understand their usefulness, especially with conditions related to structure and connective tissues. If you use one of our tinctures, you also may find benefit combining its internal use with a topical, such as our specially formulated salve and liniment. We describe using these in a 1-2-3 Method in Blog articles and our website.

Our body is an assortment of drug and chemical interactions always taking place. Medications and diet can work against healing. Prescription medications come with numerous side effects, one of which is the act of pulling essential micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) out of bones, tissues, joints, etc; another is digestive tract upheaval with the destruction of essential bacteria, thus causing poor absorption of nutrients, etc. Diet that includes caffeine, sodas, processed sugars, salt, gluten also pull healing nutrients and moisture out of body areas (we call it “peeing away your vitamins”), and create inflammation.

I say this because you should not expect a miracle, but may need to look closely at your medications and make some diet adjustments. Additionally, you should try to engage in weight-bearing exercise, such as walking, yoga, etc.

Tinctures are very benign, if properly prepared and administered under guidance. People often use tinctures while using medications, eventually reducing or eliminating the prescription medications because the tincture does well. Many people are on heart and blood pressure regulating meds, or have health conditions such as diabetes, pregnancy, etc. There should always be a caution. The natural occurring glycosides in the herbs (such as Solomon’s Seal), do have heart tonic qualities. However, in the small doses taken, our tinctures should have no problems integrating with your body.

Finally, if you take a tincture, do so for 6 days, then take a day of rest from it. The day of rest (drink plenty of water) allows the body to flush out any cellular debris, toxins, etc.; it also prevents the body from adapting to the herbs and thus needing more and more to the job done. Many people experience a noticeable effect after starting up on the tincture again.

I have compassion for your condition, and hope you can find ways to continue to celebrate life in spite of anything else. Blessings to you.

  9. This product is amazing for bone spurs and inflammation in feet and legs. It’s a miracle herb sent through the work of Solomon’s Seal Company.

  10. My father n law has no cartilage in his knees, he id trying to avoid surgery, will this stuff really help, and if so which one does he need?

    • For long term and/or complex injuries, we recommend Formula #6: All-in-One Deep Healing. It contains herbs from the other formulas mixed into one. The dosage is higher. A 2oz bottle will last about 3 weeks.

Numerous people have successfully used our tinctures to rehabilitate knee injuries. It is important to make some dietary changes (less refined sugar, alcohol, caffeine, sodas, gluten, diary) because various foods can work against healing by leaching out needed micronutrients in tissues, bones, joints and fluids. If appropriate, weight is a concern. One pound extra is equal to 5-6 pounds added force on the knees when standing, walking, climbing. Also, drink plenty of water to get moisture into healing areas – this is vital.

I might also recommend using the salve and liniment in conjuction with the internal tincture. This approach is discussed in other articles in this blog and on our website. Whereas, none of this can guarantee full repair of knee and cartilage, it most certainly has been helpful for many people.

I wish your father-in-law the best of healing, life and joy.

    • Many people have reported exceptional results using Solomon’s Seal for ankle and foot issues relating to tendons, ligaments and joints. Often these issues are a result of flat-footedness, in that no supporting arch puts a great deal of strain on the tendons and ligaments to try to keep structural integrity. Pain or discomfort often radiates up the leg into the knee and hip area. The very reason we began our work with Solomon’s Seal and related herbs was because Tricia (master herbalist and creator of our herbal products, and my life partner) was able to successfully and dramatically heal her plantar fascitis using SS, in just a couple weeks, after being almost cripple from the discomfort of the condition. So, it is definitely worth trying. Blessings!

Greetings Forrest – I am a 77 year old man, former track athlete, with no ailments or compaints other than a thinned L-5 spinal disk which is the residual effect of a ruptured disk from a skiing fall 48 years ago. I experience mild chronic lower back pain which is most frequently alleviated by a chiropractic adjustment. What do you recommend for treating this tolerable, though noticeable, back condition? I take am an inveterate herb and supplement taker – currently taking reishi mushrooms, kelp, whey, psyllium, sea salt, trace minerals, licorice, wood betony, yarrow, and alfalfa. I was studying the book “Herbal Wisdom” and Solomon’s Seal + Horsetail caught my attention.

    • I congratulate you for your fitness at age 77. Your intuition about combining Solomon’s Seal with Horsetail is good — their combination is fantastic and should have some effectiveness on your long-term injury. Matthew Wood, herbalist and author of Herbal Wisdom, in consultation, has helped us over the years, as herbalists ourselves, to understand the best synergistic effects of herbs working together or independently. In short, you cannot go wrong by giving Formula #3: Cartilage & Tissue Repair a try. Make certain to increase water intake, and try to minimize inflammatory foods while administering herbs as tinctures. I wish you many more years of vibrancy!

  12. Hello Forest-
Do you think SS would work for my Eosinophilic fasciitis?
I have been tapering off Predizone which has really taken a toll after 4 months.
Currently I’m on 30mg a day, from starting at 60mg.

    • Definitely consider using the Acute & Chronic Injury Salve, and even our Healing Salve. These are not only replenishing for the dermal layer of skin, but penetrate deeply to the fascia level where your condition is most acute. Some people have even reported success by using our Solomon’s Seal tincture by actually placing the drops on the skin and rubbing in with the salve. Normally, tinctures are taken orally/internally.
The internal use of the tincture should not interfere with your down-scaling of use of Predizone. You might consider starting off with 1/2 dosage for first week or so, just for safety.

  13. What do you recommend for cartilage regeneration when it is a bone on bone issue. I have heard that it is not possible to regenerate cartilage when it is fully gone, but I have also heard the opposite

    • The surface of a bone that is part of a joint is covered with hyaline cartilage. The synovial membrane wraps the cartilage and contains a fluid of egglike or gooey viscosity — its purpose to reduce friction, acting as a lubricant between touching surfaces, and to facilitate joint movement. It also nourishes cartilage. The cells that produce the synovial fluid, synoviocites, reasbsorb the fluid in a constant recycling process. Connecting tendons and ligaments at joints are always needing adjustments in an injured area, to accommodate for the injury and subsequent possible healing.

This quick anatomy of the issue you face is what sparks the debate about cartilage regeneration or not. I believe that the body is a constantly regenerating organism, in spite of the natural law of entrophy (decline). So, I believe that it MAY be possible to regenerate cartilage. The real point, however, is how to take care of the supporting cast in this drama: the synovial membrane, fluids, connective tissues. Helping and regenerating them will help support the ailing cartilage situation. As well, strengthening the muscles above and below the affected joint area is invaluable for additional support.

The purpose of the herbs we use is to “read” the body’s needs in injured places, specifically joints and connective tissues. People have reported a variety of beneficial results in using our Formula #3: Cartilage and Tissue Repair. The Solomon’s Seal and Horestail combine for a synergistic effect. They have reported less pain and discomfort, more mobility and flexibility, less stiffness. Also try our salve and liniment that support the tincture use.

Always dramatically increase water intake when using herbs. Additionally, assess and adjust diet (make alkaline) to increase ingestion of live micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) that spark healing in injured areas.
